Why is it that Wordpress will not work for me?

No matter what I do, Wordpress continues to get errors. I fix one problem, only to encounter another one. I come here and get help, and the next time I post something, or correct an error, something else crops up. If this is such a wonderful program, why is it always going wrong for me?

Check out what is at the top of every page on my site, now I fixed a problem I had.

I swear, I am just about ready to throw in the towel on this Worpress platform. I think that everyone who promotes it as a way for anyone to build a web presense is crazy.

That's strange, I've never had a single problem with any Wordpress site that I've created. Are you sure that your hosting is up to snuff and supports using Wordpress?

If you keep having problems from fixing things, you may just want to do a full wipe and install and start fresh. I've done that on many sites using Hostgator as my host and it's always worked fine.

      Tim,

Out of the box, Wordpress validates without errors.

Try switching to the default theme and deactivating plugins. If that still shows a problem then check with your hosting as Tyson suggested.

If everything validates as it should, reintroduce the various changes you would like - new theme - plugins and validate inbetween each one. You will then find the culprit.

      Hope this helps,

      Myles

Sometimes it is better to start over than try to fix errors that you cannot even identify.
        Backup your blog.
Delete your blog and create a new one with another theme. If it doesn't work the problem may be with the WP software.
Uninstall every thing and make a fresh install of the WP software.
If the new blog you created before reinstalling Wp worked. The problem is with your blog. So install the theme and check if it works (with no content, no tweaking, and no plugins). If it does. Keep addind elements or modifications until you get the one that made it crash.

I host with HostGator also. I don't know if I am just stupid, or maybe just not cut out for the IM business, or what. But I am going to polish off my rusty HTML skills and build sites with regular HTML and screw this damn Wordpress. I have not built a site yet that I have not had at least one problem that needed fixing.

Are you sure that you are actually "fixing" things when you do something or just creating more problems. I know myself I am not that savvy when it comes to HTML and PHP and it is very easy to screw something up when you "think" you are fixing it. By your own admission your skills are rusty.
Most WP sites I set up just install and work without having to go into the code. When I do go in there I make a copy of what is there BEFORE I start messing with it, just in case.
Also it could be something to do with the themes you use. There are some themes out there that just come with errors built in.

I don't ever mess with the code, as I don't understand CSS or PHP. This last problem was that when you went to the URL, you got my about page, click on the home page and you got my about page. A fellow told me that my code was messed up and to reinstall the softwar, so that is what I did. Got a new download from WP and uploaded it to the server via FTP. Now at least one of the posts comes up, but not the one that is supposed to be the home page, but that code shows at the top of every page.

I have not touched any code, only posted pages and posts. Set the parameters in settings etc. It is like I have a curse on my with WP.

That is easily fixed. Go to settings>reading, then select whether you want the latest post as the front page or a static front page. In which case you would then use the drop down menu and select which page you want as the front page.
Also in the General settings make sure you have the wordpress address URL and blog address url set correctly.

wordpress has been the unicorn for me for a long time, but I kept coming back taking another crack at it, until I fell in love. Now its hard for me not to use WP, I found that errors can come from out of date plugins, I got locked out of my site once, all it took was to get hosting support on chat, and they figured it out! Id make sure all your plugins are up to date when installing, goodluck!

I agree with your comments completely.
I use wordpress under duress really because it does reduce website production time. I stick with one theme that I alter to the theme of my site

But wordpress is not perfect by any means.

    • Many themes are unuseable and ugly.
    • "Premium" Themes are inscrutable
    • Plugins can ruin weeks of work when you activate them.
    • There seems to be a whole raft of modifications you have to do to even make the search engines find the website in the first place

Still the lovefest for wordpress continues unabated

I wish I had a bad product that was so popular. But it is free

Wordpress woks really smoothly for me. I would recommend you pay someone to install Wordpress for, especially if you do not have Fantastico and if you have a custom theme. You could probably have it done for around $20.

I have only ever had one problem with WordPress. When I would paste in my text and click publish I had about a 50/50 chance of loosing it. If it didn't auto save then I would lose it.

Then I switched from Internet Explorer (IE) to Firefox (FF) and I have never had that problem again. IE is unstable at times... Use FF!

Yes I used Fantascito. It worked fine for a while, then it just started acting up after I tried to put in my AdSense code. I never did get it to work right after that, and the AdSense code never worked right either. I still have not got it in. But then I only work on it in short spurts. I don't really have a lot of patients, otherwise I would have been a doctor.

I've never had an issue either and I also use Host gator... simply go into your cpanel and choose the quick install option under Software/and services. from the quick install page choose the wordpress install... after your install you can change themes through your WP admin screen ( the famous 5 minute WP install) .... It really is that easy

You are a sick man Mr. Darklock. But then most people from Washington are.
