Question for Canadian Warriors

I have a couple of keywords that are absolutely dominating "Pages from Canada" in Google. Some of these keyword phrases have a healthy search volume but it seems Canadians hardly ever touch the "Pages from Canada" option but prefer the web. My question is, do Canadians even bother with "Pages from Canada"?

If they are shopping for shipped products or searching locally yes.

Otherwise it's ignored. Are you on a .ca domain or does your site say Canada on the main page? If so that's probably why you are being put at the kids table

No, it is a .com and there is no mention of Canada.

Nope. Not unless I'm specifically looking for a Canadian - business, person, location. In fact, even then I don't. Somehow, Google sends me Canadian data when I don't ask for it.

Hey Sylvia, I have the same problem. Why does Google keep giving me Canadian data when I don't ask for it, bugs the hell out of me.

The only time this ever happens to me is when I am using google.ca. When I am using google.com I don't seem to have that problem, UNLESS i mentioned a Canadian city or province.

When I type Google.com into my browser, it automatically switches to Google.ca

When you are on the google.ca page.

Look just below the search box, and it will look something like this

Advertising Programs Business Solutions About Google Go to Google.com

Just click on the go to google.com and you're golden.

You can also then set that to your homepage if you like. Usually once you are there, it will usually automatically just go back there when you go back to google.

If it doesnt, then just press that link that will take you back to google.com

Because it is reading your IP address and it "thinks" being in Canada you are interested in Canadian data.

It does the same wherever you travel: if it has specific site for that country... when going to G. "home" it takes you to google.de or google.ch etc.

When a company grows big enough it reaches the level of stupidity where it tries to guess (figure out) what the user wants... under the disguise of being "helpful".
Think MS, think G... - don't you love them?

Bunch of tossbags. I am an internet marketer and therefore, I couldn't give a rats arse about Canadian data. How am I going to see if my site is on the first page of Google in the U.S? This is my primary target audience.

You may be at google.com but unless you use the /ncr switch your results are still geo located. Clicking to g.com does nothing to reduce the number of localized results.

Sorry I just did a test on google.ca and google.com And it showed a DRASTIC change in search results.

EDIT: for example I did a search for restaurants in google.ca and it gave me options for restaurants in toronto, or vancouver, etc. When I switched to google.com none of that came up.

so yes, there is a HUGE difference in searching in .ca VS .com for us Canadians

Doesn't work for Sylvia and me. Canadian results always dominate without the /ncr switch. I don't really care since I changed to Scroogle.

Strange, because I just did another test, and searched in scroogle, and it gave me the same results as it gave me in google.com

Did you try >>Tools>>Delete Recent History>>Select All and retry your search. This too can yield a drastic change in results.

Yes this is true, because your browser, and google can tend to be lazy, and bring up cache results in your history.

This has happened to be on numerous occasions.

Here's what I do. I use this FF plugin most of the time, but for those rare occasions when I want strictly Canadian data, I use google.ca and "pages from Canada."

Unfortunately, neither way is foolproof. Like Istvan said, since you're logging into Google.com from a Canadian IP, you'll still get some Canadian data in your find. And when you're using Google.ca + Pages from Canadad because you want to shop here, you'll still get a ton of stuff of results from all over the world. And that drives me completely bonkers!

I don't hit it really. If I'm looking to buy something, I might hit it to see if there is anything in Canada. I don't do it everytime.

I never use that option and don't think many others do either. When I want to search for stuff locally I use sites like kijiji.

Use google.com/ncr that tells G not to geo locate.

You can also use Scroogle Scraper

They are a proxy for Google results. No geo location or ads.

A little while ago, I figured out how to set this thing so Google wouldn't do that. Can't tell you where that was now. But even so, just today I was running a few searches and it gave me Canadian data. I immediately wondered why it skipped to .com again. It hadn't done that since I figured out that... whatever it was. But it hadn't skipped. It was still on .com yet it gave me Canadian data and Canadian Google ads, which has happened several times now recently.

I agree, it's a pain in the butt. We want to play with the Big Boys, not local chaps. Now, I'm never sure just WHAT data I'm getting, unless it's obvious. Page Rank is one. My sites are lower on .ca than on .com, but now I just don't know what I'm seeing.
