Bad SEO and Blog Spam

I have a LOT of blogs and I get spam like this all the time. I know, I know, I could use akismet or any number of spam filters, but sometimes I just think it's funny how people really think that this junk will get approved. I know my graphic is hard to see (should have sized it diff.), but it basically says "qbacek" and contains some links.

Worse are the ones who use spinner bots and end up being these rediculous attempts at prose like "the abundance of gratitude that I had gained from your learning blog is abaited only by my gratuitous usage of your superior verbage done nightly for the readers of your hastily gained fanatics of followings...."

This is why bots and lame companies that provide "backlinks" which are nothing more than nonsense spam - just don't work. In fact they hurt your SERP!

And the thing that kills me is that blog posting and backlinks are not only effective SEO, they are critical (especially for highly competetive keywords). Regardless of the impression that Google tries to make that backlinking for rank is "bad". Facts are, all other things being equal, backlinks are the deciding factor of who gets ranked first. Yet, there is a general mistrust of SEO providers (mostly deserved).

So. If you are trying to work on your ranking, please take a couple of moments and post something relevant. Use your own name and email (or at least something other than "viagra1243", and for goodness sake, post something that makes sense and contributes. Don't put a link in the post unless it's really useful (to the reader!!!).

Done properly and respectfully, I will approve a comment even though I know the poster is trying to promote their site. But, if they are actually saying something that is nice or helpful for my readers, then what do I care if they get a backlink?

Just make the link a nofollow, but leave it there... I'm kidding, you never .. One of those posts could be from yours truly.

    I always just press spam.

  • I don't know how akismet works but Mollom is friggin' awesome at filtering these jerks out. These types of comments never even make it to the approval queue. Even the ones that poor Filipinos get paid to post can be marked as spam and removed from consideration for all sites using Mollom. It's totally sweet. I only get comments I want and rarely have to report spam because someone else has banned that IP already.

Blog commenting is a great way to get relevant backlinks, by the way. You just have to be cool about it and make other people's sites more interesting. I've been experimenting with this, and Google seems to think that if a blog owner approves your comment/link, the comment/link is worth something.

But be cool about it. Make the web a better place, and the web will pay you back threefold.
