Marketing My Small Business

Hey guys,

I run a small business designing websites for local companies. My rates are well below the competitive average, and in my opinion I have a great product.

Does anyone have any strategies to offer up on how I could go about marketing my product on a larger scale?

Online and offline approaches are welcomed.

Thanks!

I would contact (email, letters, phone) advertising agencies and copywriters in your area and propose joint ventures. You can help their clients with sites, landing pages etc. This leverages your marketing efforts...

There has been a lot of information posted here in WF on that subject and a great number of WSO's.

Do a search on here first.

I've bought info from Michael Silvester, Andrew Cavanagh, David Preston, Jobless Dad - ummmm I know I'll miss someone - but start with those and you cant go wrong.

When you say on a larger scale, do you mean outside
of the local area, or bumping up your fees to existing
    local customers?

Apologies, I should have been more specific. I'm looking to sell outside of the local area.

Outside of working the search engines to rank high on a popular keyword...I suppose I was just looking for any tricks that other successful business owners have come across.

Keep networking and building connection offline. Offer a coupon or an extra service for the same price on your website with a limited time.

    1. The Jones effects
    2. Limited time/supply
    3. Give a few examples
    4. Link yourself with local companies

"My rates are well below the competitive average"

      That's no real advantage.

In having low prices or advertising prices at all is usually a huge mistake.

You should really be charging by the project and the fee should be different for every project since every project is different.

Go to business networking events, ask everyone you know and everyone you've worked with for referrals (you can offer to give the people they know a gift consultation of some kind).

Talk to the business owners you know and the owners of businesses where you're spending money.

Ask your friends who they know.

Also consider using snail mail, email, the telephone and talking to business owners in person to get new clients.

In this niche getting clients is fairly simple...you just need to talk to as many business owners as possible, learn to ask questions and listen then suggest customized solutions based around the information you gather and run with the suggestion that gets a business owner excited.

Also be sure to charge a substantial upfront fee before you start any work (50% upfront is common.)

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Raise your prices and focus on a specific niche business segment.

I agree with the other knowledgeable posters here. Low pricing is not a strategy, but a short term tactic... and it usually fails. Unless, of course, you can somehow become the Walmart of web design. Since web design is pretty broad, I'd suggest making a list of those elements you are great at, why your product justifies a higher priced and the added financial value this creates for your customers. At minimum, this will help you define which customers you should be targeting.

You are making this work at home stuff way harder than it is. Ready for some sanity? Clear your head and start over.

Offline strategies would be to attend MeetUp groups, Chamber Events, LeTip and BNI breakfast meetings. Most of these groups aren't stocked with Internet Marketers and Wed Designers.

Referrals would be a good start but you could also work with other businesses such as SEO companies that might need your services as well. You could start from there.
