Why is phrase match bigger than broad match?

Hope this isn't a duplicate question; I've done a quick search, but didn't see anything similar.......

I've been looking at a number of keywords recently and been surprised about the difference between phrase match (i.e. in quotes) and broad match.

One example: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
Results from Google (UK) : about 296,000 - no quotes
about 1,600,000 with quotes

I've seen the same kind of thing with keywords in very different subjects, and as wondering if anyone else has seen the same or has any idea what's going on,

thanks,

Jon.

Are you referring to searches or search results listed?

Both can be inaccurate, by the way.

In any case though, it should theoretically be impossible for the broad match number to be smaller than the phrase match number, so I'd guess it's some kind of a quirk or bug.

It's the number of sites Google lists just below the search box, and above the actual listings - e.g. "About 1,600,000 results (0.19 seconds)".

This one has something similar going on: Krell papa dock - the broad match is around 4,000; but the phrase match has just come down from 65,000 to around 13,000. I kept refreshing the page, and eventually it came down - but still the numbers seem to be the wrong way round....

    cheers,

    Jon.

I too have been facing this problem since the new Google layout/design came up...

Another example keyword this happens with is: Bose Companion 5 - which has 5 million results WITH quotes, and 205,000 without.

Interestingly, the numbers change yet again, just by using a lower-case "b"!

    cheers.

Using the quotes refines the searches and should be smaller than broad. This is an issue with google, they must be upgrading or something.

I tried doing some quotes vs non quotes and google gave me a message, that my request could not be processed because they thought it was spam..lol
