Post slug is a feature in WordPress that allows you to change the URL of your blog entries.

Using Post Slug, you can shorten that or throw in a keyword or two to help your SEO efforts. So what you do is enter the following into the Post Slug area found in your post page. It's on the right if you are using WordPress 2.3 and under

On WordPress 2.5 and above it's right under the Post Title

    Hope this helps

EDIT: Craig beat me to it

I think it's the URL.. like search engine friendly URLs.. so if you look at the URL of this thread, it says "an-anybody-explain-what-slug-post.html" - it describes what the page is about.

    That's my take on it.

If you are talking about Wordpress Sites here is some info from Wordpress:

The SEO Slugs Wordpress plugin removes common words like 'a', 'the', 'in' from post slugs to improve search engine optimization.

For example, when you publish a post with a title like this:

"What You Can Do Immediately For Higher Rankings",
Wordpress automatically assigns a long filename to your post, called a post slug:

    /what-you-can-do-immediately-for-higher-rankings

SEO Slugs plugin strips common words like "what", "you" or "can" out of your post slug to make it more search engine friendly. With SEO Slugs plugin activated, the slug for our example blog post would look like this:

    /immediately-higher-rankings

The slug is generated on saving a post (so you get a chance to look at it before publishing, and change it), or on publish. It won't overwrite an existing slug. You can force a new slug generation by deleting the existing one.

The location is is your WP admin page: Go to Posts>Post Tags

    Hope this helps

Strangely enough, Wordpress explains it for categories, but not for pages.

"The "slug" is the URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens."

I copied that from the categories tab.

As I understand it the "slug" is the bit that appears under the Page title, after you have first saved it. It actually says permalink - but if you have your permalink structure set so that it displays your page name, you should see the "url-friendly" version of your page title displayed there.

Of course, I could be completely wrong and it might be something else!

It's what ultimately makes up your permalink for your wordpress post... you can edit it before and even after you publish your post but I'd recommend doing it before... because after you post and ping the url... the search engines will index that url (especially if you have a popular blog) and if you change it, the visitors to the original url will get a 404 error
