How specific should I be when choosing a niche?

For example.

I want to get into the dog training niche.

Should I choose: One breed of dog?
A few specific Breeds?
All breeds?

How do I know when I am being too specific?

Also, any other advice that will help in some way. Would be very much appreciated.

Heavens to Betsy! Not another dog website! Within reason, you can never be too specific when it comes to your niche selection. Generally speaking, you will receive less traffic to a targeted niche but the visitors will have more interest in what you are offering. And they actually might buy something.

    "Niche" is good.

    But you want "MICRO niche".

Micro niche is any key word/phrase with less than 30,000 competitors on google using exact match. Anything 30,001 up to 1 million is niche.

Ideally, you want 2,400 monthly exact searches or better.

There are other factors but in terms of pure numbers these are it.

This works in any type of niche:

Gather some stats first. Get top list of keywords using Google external tool, enter each in Google search bar, get the top 10 sites, go to alexa, keyword spy or buy a month's subscription from SEMRush, enter the site urls individually in the traffic info, and look for the common keywords/keyphrases bringing them the traffic. You should be able to find your answer where to start.

I'd focus on one specific breed of dog at a time. Not only will it be easier to get ranked and gain traction in the marketplace, your sites will be better because you won't be trying to be everything to everyone.

    Hi Theone,

As per previous posts I maid. You are looking at the word niche in the wrong way. A niche is an OPENING within a market

I will disagree with posts above. It has NOTHING to do with software tools, search volumes, how many other sites there are etc etc!

    Here is what I mean:

    Dog training market

You decided to look into people who want to train dogs. That is a market. You look at at people who want to train German Shepards. That is a sub market. You DISCOVER that there are a lot of people who wan't to learn how to train their German Shepards how to jump into the air when you snap your fingers. Yet there are no products on the market that teaches you how to train your German Shepard how to do this.

That is a NICHE. An opening in the market. Develope that product and sell it to those people.

I disagree. Tools have greatly assisted me in niche research.

After searching for a broad niche category and you know there is sufficient enough searches, check the competition. Sometimes there is a lot of competition in a broad niche. Look deeper in to the niche for topics that relate to problems people experience in the niche. These small problems are called sub niches. I have found the monies is in the sub niches to the niche. Key sub niche must have appropriate search volume, and have less competition.

Focus on the micro niche! Otherwise this niche is too scattered and competition's going to be tough to dominate. Well you said it's your passion you'll figure it out.
