ELO, bit of 'confusion'

Sorry for misunderstanding. Tried to make a very important point, but used a real life example and because of the nature of my message, came across very hypocritical which I can't abide.

Hopefully mod will now delete this absolutely useless thread.

The coolest thing about this forum is that you can post just about anything that you want... freedom of speach. At least that is what we call it in the US and one of the reasons why we kicked the (whiney) Limey b@$tard$ back across the drink! LOL! For all my non-whiney Brit friends...no offense.

You are looking for customers on this forum and some will not be realistic but you have to deal with it.

Don't argue rates or justify your hourly charge with your potential customers. You set your rates and that's what you work for. If they want to argue - they can't do it if you don't argue back.

"That's too much...blah blah" - should receive an answer of "Sorry - hope you find someone to meet your needs - thank you for contacting me".

            End of story.

Yep, exactly right. But I went a step further and *tried* to help them find somebody else. Who does that? Maybe I should just be a cold businessman. I mean, I know business is selfish but sometimes I just can't help it.

It's the fact that I tried to help this person after I knew they weren't a prospective client and they came back with childish remarks. I tried to help dammit!

              THAT was my point.

In some quarters, using the term "3rd world" is quite offensive, colonial and patronizing. Very 1970/80s

Terms like overseas, developing world, emerging market world etc. are much more acceptable.

Imagine 30 years from now when China and possibly India are the first and second biggest economies and someone from there emails you telling you in the USA that you are 3rd world.

(Yes I now that 3rd world does not relate to economy size, but just trying to make a point)

So it could be that. I don't know though.

There will be people who get their panties in a bunch no matter how you phrase something if they want to skirt the real issues. Diplomacy is sometimes a total waste of time. Hey, if the US stats support seeing us as a third world country, then by all means, call us third world. It all means the same in the long run. If the phrases are well turned enough that people can't complain about our wording, they can always just play the "race or nationality" card anyway despite.

It doesn't matter if you say:
The women there are having prevalent weight control problems.
The women there are often grotesquely obese.
      Hey, those chicks look corn-fed.
Someone is going to worry about how you said what you said instead of concentrating on the issue that they need to lose weight.

Yes, but aren't we all friends here. So can't a buddy come here and unload his frustrations?

I don't know, maybe I am naive but I kind of think of this place as a family. I have found that most of the time when I have a problem, or I see someone else with a problem, someone or many people jump in and help with no second thought, just like family does. So I have come to think of the people here as almost like family.

Exactly what I'm talking about hahaahaha have you seen some of the trash above? The inevitable inner-thread dispute about something which really doesn't matter in the slightest.

I'm not simply whining here, I'm making a very important point - these forums aren't for little kiddies but they attract so many immature morons it's unbearable. The trash you have to read through.

..and I guess it was foolish to throw about the term but I AM a developer and work with many 3d world developers and both parties use this vocabulary. I think whoever said that above....*whine whine whine*...

you're right, that is whiney. I'm sorry, didn't mean to cause offense but I must be getting the wrong idea about this forum. I thought it was for business minded people - you know, mature professionals with drive.

    Damien,

As a content and copywriter I can understand your frustration with this. I charge relatively high rates, not the highest by any means, but I don't work for peanuts either. I very often get people who are turned off by what I'm charging. There was a time when I used to let it bother me. I got over it. I have clients who are more than willing to pay my rates, if I didn't have that I wouldn't be eating very often. So the ones that are seemingly offended by my rates I kindly redirect to a writer or area of writers who will fit into their budget.

I think the real problem that people have with your post here has nothing to do with it being "whiney". It has everything to do with it being hypocritical, and in all honesty, bad for your business. Here's why. You had a member of this forum seek you out for work. A deal wasn't able to reached. So instead of keeping it to yourself, you made a rather divisive post about the entire situation. On top of that you did it in the name of professionalism and maturity.

In effect what you did was call out a potential customer for being cheap, most likely eliminating that person as a future customer should that ever change. By calling them out in public, you have now alienated an unknown number of other customers because, quite frankly, your post comes off as childish and very unprofessional. Let's be honest for a second. There aren't many people in the world that can say their skills are so superior to everyone else that it doesn't matter how they come off. What your post implies is that you are difficult to work with. That in and of itself will lose you a ton of business before you even step foot in the door.

Next time you may be better off choosing to rant somewhere other than where your customers hang out. You don't see Steve Jobs going into Best Buy and reaming out a customer who thinks the iphone is too expensive and chooses another brand.

And no I was not the member who contacted Damien.

Yeh, I've edited it. I guess because I KNOW where I'm coming from, I see no harm - but the intention has been heavily misconstrued.

I deal with many many clients every week - It has nothing to do with my rates, my rates are in my thread (in my sig)..not like I'm trying to hide anything. $15/hour is low low low for a professinal web developer who does both design and programming and enterprise work.

The point was that this particular person reacted to my advice in such an imature and childish way, like we were in the playground or something.

      Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I think you do have the wrong idea about the forum.

This isn't 'business' forum - it's an open marketing forum where anyone can join.

There are teenagers here who haven't left school let alone learned what business is like.

So I think it's unrealistic to expect that everyone here is running a business or even thinks of what they do as a business.

It's a public forum and we get pretty a full slice of society the good and the bad.

        Hey Damien,

Don't take the responses to heart.

You were trying to give some people a heads up that being negative/aggressive is not a good way to do business. That's a good intent.

Don't let the responses put you off posting.

Take them as a lesson learned and think twice about how you phrase a negative thread next time - no big deal. Don't make too much of it.

Maybe Damien acted a little stupid, but your age gives you nothing over him.
