I doubt that there will be a mad dash of web surfers that are rushing to opt out.

      Well I just did.
Google analytics is the biggest cause of slow loading web pages,
at least it is on my PC.

      I've noticed an improvement already.

Yup that's true. G made some improvements on that the other day but obviously they would rather give the opton to opt out altogether for those who are having it real bad (slow).

Wait a minute. I think this is some kind of placebo. It doesn't look like 1and1 uses google analytics on their site.

on 1and1 there seems to be some tracking but not sure what as it seem a lot of code. As I have a reseller account with enom and use godaddy a lot for domains it has always been a pain in loading very slow. I can load enom and login to my account in a split second now. I just compared on 2 machines and the one with the plugin installed is very fast.

So now it seems that if your site don't have google on then you can use it as a advantage

I don't see that this opt out extension makes it any faster.

Here's a super scientific experiment I just conducted to see if this opt-out extension makes pages with google analytics load any faster.

              Here's what I did:

              1. I downloaded and installed the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on for Firefox

              2. Downloaded and installed Yslow firefox extension which has a handy page load timer.

              3. I proceeded to record the page load time for Domain Names, Web Hosting and SSL Certificates - Go Daddy for 5 times with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on turned on, and then 5 times with it turned off. Note that each page load was a hard page load using <CTRL>+<SHIFT>+R and that the browser was not just pulling the page from cache.

              Here's the results:

With the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on
              1.962
              1.948
              2.215
              2.762
              2.083
              avg 2.194 seconds

Without the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on
              2.136
              2.495
              2.063
              1.895
              2.105
              avg 2.1388 seconds

It doesn't look like there's any increase in page speed with the Google Analytics Opt-out browser add-on activated. My tests actually suggest the page loads faster without Opting out. Of course, I probably need to do more trials, but that's like watching paint dry.

I just don't think the Opt-out browser add-on is going to make an appreciable difference in page load speed. It's not like you don't have the script cached in your browser already.

That is odd, I thought that I read that one of the metrics that Google uses to place your site in the serps is the time your page uses to load. I believe that I got that reading something from Google, but I could be wrong about that. I don't really remember. And I know that Google doesn't usually reveal the stuff in their alog. So I am guessing that I am wrong about that.

Same thing with web history. No one is going to opt-out or install a add-on.

Problem is: European countries are going to force Google to change some *stuff* and the company is trying to look *good*.

    Just my 2 cents.

It obviously won't do too much for the reliability of their (your) stats if some people opt out and others don't. It wil probably depend on how much they publicize it and how they word it. If they put a big banner up that says something to the effect of "Protect your privacy. Stop webmasters from getting information about your visit to their sites." Well, then people may, indeed opt out. If they just have it in the fine print somewhere, it will probably just be business as usual. If they are ever forced to change it to an opt in system, it will cease to be a functional analytics option.

That's a good one. I remember that mass hysteria that broke out here on the warriorforum not so long ago. People were going completely ape**** and they completely abandoned reason regarding the presumed impact of Sidewiki. There were some very entertaining and heated threads back then with gems of information such as:

"Sidewiki will lead to the DEATH of internet marketing."

"Sidewiki will allow spammers to advertise on MY sales page! WTF>???<!!"

"Sidewiki is going to send all of my visitors to Amazon.com"

"Sidewiki will result in CHILD PORN being placed on my entire web site without MY permission."

I can't seem to find some of the best threads that mentioned sidewiki but there were some pretty passionate opinions going on. I'm talking about people that said they'd blackball you if you didn't agree that SideWiki was the greatest danger to online marketers in the whole world.

It's crazy how people went nuts about that. It's funny how people act sometimes.
