Choice of domain name - question

After doing keyword research on a competitive niche I finally found a keyword phrase with a good amount of searches and very low competition on google search.

The domain is already registered with .com, .net and .org but only the .net is developed. The .org gives a server not found message and the .com is only parked but I am not looking to pay for it if I do not need to.

My question is: should I register a domain name and then just put some digits on the end like this : goodkeyword411. com

And would that work on getting on the first page of google, when the keyword has only 15,000 results when keyword is entered with quotes "keyword" ?

If anyone has experience with this, please let me hear from you.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Adding the numbers would possibly be effective if you used an appropriate title and meta description.

    But keep this in mind.

It is not always about how much competition there is for a given kw, it comes down to the strength of the competitors on the 1st page. Those are your target so do some research on them and see how many and how strong their backlinks are, see how good their content is, etc

Without knowing those factors it would be hard to say if a keyword domain and proper onsite SEO would be enough, but more and more these days it simply isn't.

I would rather put a suffix on the end, like review, store, sale.

Peter's right, it's not just the number of competing pages.

If there are a lot of top level domains in the top ten, with thousands of backlinks, then it doesn't matter if there are only 1,000 competing pages, because it would be very difficult to break into the top ten.

I would add a word to the end as well, but if it could reflect a long tail keyword it would be ideal e.g. dogtraining.com could be dogtrainingschool or dogtraininglessons, rather than just adding the usual suspects. Don't do the number thing.

I agree to add another word or I have seen a fair amount of success using a hyphen. I always try to get .com because it is more commercial viable.
