www and non www version- help needed!

great- i just discovered, after trying and trying to get more pages crawled and indexed by google- that my www version of the site has 8 pages indexed and hundreds of backlinks, but my non www version has hundreds of indexed pages and NO BACKLINKS. is this affecting my serp position?

what does google see? if i started getting backlinks for non www version, would it push up?

should i set a preferred domain in webmaster tools?

really really would appreciate some help

thanks,
Kelly

Yes, set the preferred domain in Webmaster Tools first. Then create a .htaccess file to rewrite all non-www traffic to www (alternately, you can accomplish this at the DNS level as a domain-level redirect). Google should merge the two sets of indexed files into the www series and maintain the link juice and SERPs. I say *should* because it is, after all, Google.

You really should use some sort of tool to redirect all traffic to the www page. If you have created a ton of backlinks for the www site, using something as simple as a .htaccess file with a 301 redirect (google it), will point all the indexed pages on google to the www pages where the backlinks live.

To do nothing could cause you grief.
