How to use headlines to supercharge your clickthrough rates

Even on Twitter, writing a powerful, direct headline makes a big different in how many people click on your link. I use bit.ly as a link shrinking tool because it also shows how many people click on your links.

I had kind of a lame headline for one of my tweets - it was something like "using keyword research helps press releases get better placement."

Yawn.

It got four clicks.

So I just rewrote the headline to "How To Use Keyword Research To Blast Your Press Release To the Top Of The Search Engines" and now people are retweeting it all over the place.

The Copyblogger genius has written the best series on headline writing I've ever seen - read all of them and watch your clickthrough rate soar, like mine did! It's made a huge difference in my success over the last few years.

Update - I went from getting four clicks when I originally posted the blah headline which didn't explain the benefits to the Twitter clicker...to 89 clicks from Twitter today!!!

From 4 to 89....that's quite a percentage increase. Anyone with math skillz care to tell us how much? Anyway - I rest my case - learn how to write strong headlines!

And if you click on that Copyblogger link I posted in the above post...the last article tells how to write effective Twitter headlines.

Thx a lot Dana - I ran a similar experiment on twitter and the results were amazing! It just shows you how a few carefully placed words can boost your traffic!

    Great points Dana,

I guess when it comes to headlines you need to satisfy the human reader as well as the search engine spiders.

    The formula I use is;
Main Keyword Phrase + Curiosity Builder / emotive phrase

There are some great headline builders online too, do you use these?

A word that builds curiosity is "this". Another word that can make increase your ctr is "new"

People also are looking for "new" things, strategies....

So something like: "this is new..." would buid curiosity...
that's one of titles who gave me the best results...simple but effective...

I haven't used any headline builders - interesting concept though!

Keywords in headlines are especially important if you are writing for SEO purposes.

In the case of Twitter, I'm specifically writing so people will click on the link and go to my website, and hopefully, order some service from me. So I don't worry about the SEO as much there - but I definitely do when I'm writing for clients.

Howdy - I've looked at twitter for traffic generation several times, and as per numerous other warriors, "I don't get it!!" .

I have twitter followings myself, and I keep getting direct messages from people within my following telling me to click on their bit.ly links - therefore I quickly unfollow them if the info sucks....

    Really - I don't get it - twitter = spamsville.com - and the com is available

If only I could do that with ALL of my efforts! Oh well. I'll take what I can get!

Great stuff Dana, I actually suffered from bad thread titles not too long ago. Thank you for the resource, I'm going to bookmark it now
