Flipping Websites, who is successful?

I have come to the decision that I would like to start my IM career in flipping websites. I have been back and forth in several different areas of IM. I've realized I need to pick one thing and just go for it or else I'm going to be doing what I have been for the past 2 weeks and that's trying to learn every trade, which gets really confusing and frustrating!

From what I have read so far I can go three different ways. I could buy unique domain names and sell them for profit, buy a website that has potential and fix it up then sell it or create my own website and try to sell it.

I understand that all areas of IM kind of go hand in hand. Finding a niche, promoting the niche and selling the niche. I found a great video online that explained how to find a niche from Dave Hermansen, which was really easy to follow but I noticed it was an older video and when I went to see if you could even purchase a membership it wasn't available. Here is the website - (sorry about the link, cant post them yet.)
www dot hermansenbrothers dot com/forum/index.php?topic=11.0

So I'm looking for a little motivation from some successful website flippers out their. What has been your experience and how did you start off? I wouldn't mind hearing the opposite as well, so I know what I'm getting myself into. What books/videos really helped you starting out?

Thanks
Keith

    Keith,

Ive flipped websites in many different shapes and forms...

Here is a list of models from easiest to hardest:

    1) Finding Good Sites with Potential that had an owner that has no idea about marketing, SEO, monetizing, etc Then you make simple changes and sell a week later.

    2) Creating simple websites with unique content with a unique domain name, selling in between $250 -$1,000

    3) Creating a membership and selling the site with recurring income, at $1k/M you can sell from $6-$12k

    4) Creating an authority site with content, multiple streams, memberships, forums, and sell in between $20-$40k

    5) Have one great idea... push it hard, get 1,000's upon 1,000's of members in a free model base (think facebook), begin to monetize for a month or two, and sell at the peak, could be high five figures into six...

I've only had one of the six figures, sold four in five figures, the rest all in the four figures.

My advice to you would be to setup something with My advice to you would be to setup something with traffic and revenue and sell, because it keeps a happy buyer.

There are a lot of flippers in here that will provide more details...

Thanks so much LMC for the great info! Do you recommend any ebooks or videos? Possibly any free content I could look over? Or even joining the War Room? I have been trying to put off spending any money these past few weeks and trying to look up as much free content as possible. It has been difficult because the WSO's are very appealing to a newbie like myself. I have to remind myself they are trying to make money as well and to not believe everything you see. Not saying that their products aren't good. But I feel like I need to do as much free research as possible before I buy anything.

10x LMC, could you provide more details on how / where to find buyers willing to pay 4 figures for a website (let's say the site has a good potential)?

Good advice, LMC. I've been doing list building for awhile but website flipping looks very lucrative and scalable.

There are many ways to flip websites. Just be careful not to jump in too fast because the fees to list your websites can be murder at some of the bigger sites like Flippa.

Thanks for the heads up Jaypeete. Would you suggest ebay instead? or somewhere else? Does Flippa have the best success rate?

I don't know if they have the best success rate or not but I do know that to get a decent listing that gets noticed you have to spend about $50. If you don't sell your site, you're out that money!

I've flipped a few sites with success, as long as they have traffic and a small income I'd be shocked to hear that you couldnt sell them.

I wouldnt rely on flipping as a sole business though, otherwise your just exchanging your time for money.

You should have an exit plan.

use the money you make from flipping to fuel a larger project that you want to focus on is the best way IMO.

You know, good topic and post, I have read at least 12 different flipping guides that all fail to mention some of the basic building blocks of creating a valuable website property.

Some of them cover, traffic, SEO, Content, and the like, but they fail to include some of the very basic, stuff, like alexa,

Did you know that just about every site that I have seen sell for low money on flippa, is a site that has no alexa info on it,

Zero, that is such a easy thing to do yet, so many website flippers fail to do it. . .

So, if you want to really make money flipping websites, create value, by building value.

      Interesting point.

Also, I notice almost none of them talk about how only a certain percentage of listed sites actually sell.

      1:traffic
      2:pagerank
      3:making money
      4:good content

I only sold a couple of sites before. It's only because I didn't have any interest anymore to the site. Both got sold due to their ranks in google/yahoo/bing. So from my experience, site ranks in search engine also hold the key in flipping site business. One of my site was ranked at 1st page of google/yahoo/bing and it got about 1000 monthly google search. It has only about 5 posts/pages. I sold it only for $100. I spend only about $30 for the domain, shared hosting, and nice banner.

So the easiest way to start perhaps is to flip niche sites.

Keith there is a lot of good advice given here. I have had some success with flipping. I will try to summarise whats been said so far as well sprinkling in my own tips.

Unless you have deep pockets and are quite experienced I would not focus solely on flipping as a business model.

As mentioned start ups can require quite a lot of money before you turn a decent profit.

Its important to realise with flipping there are no guarantees, although with established sites that have traffic and revenue you are a lot more likely to sell your site.

My advice to you would be to pick a time frame, lets say 6 months. Then pick a monetization method Clickbank or Adsense etc. Focus on getting as much traffic and revenue you as possible. Then when you have steady traffic, SERPs and revenue flip when ready.

I have been through quite a few flipping books and courses and they all had something missing. The best place to learn about flipping is flippa. Make a spy file and watch successful sellers and sites.Learn from them. Also pay attention to what doesn't sell and try to figure out why.

@Sam your negative attitude is quite disappointing and not what is needed. Why do you call LMC an exception just because he has been successful. There are many decent people on this forum who quote earnings to illustrate a point because after all this is an IM forum. Perhaps he now has a lot of money to invest but Im sure it didn't happen overnight by pushing the big red success button. He has nothing to lose ! Once again this is a truly bizarre statement that can only be made by somebody without any understanding of IM despite your "SEO Pro" title.

Yommys01 has done very well with site flipping. He has been banned for a few days which will expire soon. You can contact him here admin@soccerfanbase.com

He also has an ebook out at the moment

I am currently on Yommys coaching program to learn site flipping, I haven't got anything bad to say about it, or him.

I hope this helps! (It will if you TAKE ACTION)

No offence to Yommy but I've had a few clients lately who came to me after failing with his coaching and were left "very disappointed".

Flipping is certainly not an easy income, it does require work, but is very much a confidence thing. Once you have sold one site, you have the confidence to sell another, and before long you will KNOW your site is going to sell and not left wondering if it's going to go unsold.

Flipping is all about "adding value". Whether it be real value (increased revenue/traffic) or percieved value (looks better than it actually is). Those who say it doesn't work or is "unpredictable" are probably the same people who setup a Wordpress site in 2 hours with some articles and expect it to sell for $300.

Flipping requires imagination, the ability to move fast and very good judgement. You need to be able to spot undervalued sites and have the ability to turn them round quickly in order to resell for a profit.

Personally, I started off with one site that I bought cheap, built it up a bit and sold for a nice profit. From there I realised it was something I was good at and now make a consistent 5 figure monthly income selling sites I buy for $XXX for $XXXX. You can get started for very little upfront capital and through reinvestment in your business, you can become successful and profitable in a matter of months.

      Hope that helps
