Article Marketing Test - 3 Days 30 Articles 1 Sale. It works! But...

I've recently conducted a mini campaign to test the effectiveness of
article marketing. So far, I can say that article marketing still works.

Here's some details on what I did.

For 3 Days I wrote 30 articles for a hot niche.
I used keywords in my titles and body.
I uploaded each article as soon as I finish it.

I redirected the articles straight to a sales page. No sign-up forms.

Just before the third day was about to end, I was surprised to see a
sale come in. It was cool. I didn't realize that I'll get a result that fast.

Now, I'm continuing with the campaign and would try to finish 100 articles before this month ends.

However, I would like to ask the long time article marketers here about
something.

- What do you do to keep the subject interesting?

I find that after writing several articles, I start to feel dull and disinterested on the topic.

- How do you keep the "spirit" alive in your articles?

Here's another problem I find. When I wrote the first few articles
I can feel that my articles are "alive". They have that sense of "spirit"
if you can call them that. However, as I write more, the articles
become "bland" or non-stimulating.

They're still logical and understandable, however, they're missing a "kick".

They somehow lack inspiration. (I hope that can describe it.)

How do you solve this.

Thanks,

Mate I know this is going to sound all macho and stuff but man up and stop worrying about your articles sounding dull. Just write them as well as you can and keep dreaming about your goals that should be motivating enough.

Otherwise try to write about several subjects and just alternate between them so you're not writing on the same subject for too long.

Besides you will only need to write for a while once you get more results, you should be outsourcing if you want to make a killing from this, so don't worry. (unless you love the subject so much, you may prefer to write them yourself, only you will know that)

write about something you care about and quit trying to spam the net with 30 variations of articles on the same topic.

    Hey Omar,

I hear what you are saying! I coach my blog customers on how to keep the "fire burning" on their niche blogs constantly. In one word, "brainstorm." Try Google when "brainstorming for writing topics" and you will find many techniques that could help stimulate your mind. I found a link from hubpages that talks about brainstorming ideas when writing:

Learn How To Brainstorm Writing Topics

In addition, why don't you try the Google "wonder wheel search?" That is an excellent tool to give you "drill down" keywords and keyword phrases that could give you ideas to write about.

Other ideas to keep your articles interesting:

    1) the 10 things you should do, or not do...blah blah blah...related to the niche
    2) Find anything trending in that niche from news feeds - talk about that
    3) What people are doing today related to the niche
    4) Any legislation or political views that is relevant to the niche
    5) Your own opinion about the niche
    6) How this niche is making the world better or worse
    7) If you have personal experience with the niche and relay your opinion from that
    8) How the niche is affecting the industry or people or things
    9) Why the niche should matter to the reader
    10) Talk about a testimonial of someone using the product or service in that niche

Well you get the idea! I have my customers brainstorming on their blogging content and push them for at least 10 to 20 ideas that they can "rotate" on their blogs so they will never run out of ideas to be passionate about.

    Hope that helps,

    Bruce

Totally agree. I actually got this advice awhile ago here on WF. Simply go to Yahoo Answers in the niche you're writing about, find a question, answer the question, BUT, instead of putting it on YA, make your answer an article instead. This will also help in making your articles feel more conversational.

good idea. I did something similar while backlinking my articles (on my own site) . . . writing good blog-replies, and comments on other people's articles, I learned some other data or opinions I hadn't thought of myself, and added those to my own articles etc.

Another idea is . . . write one great article, and use all the rest of the not-so-good articles to create backlinks to that great article. Especially if you use UAW or something like that, one average article and 2 quick rewrites can get you lots of backlinks, so increases the traffic to your best article. See if that works

If you're targeting specific keywords, you basically have to write the same thing. I wrote 300 articles for my main site, and they were all essentially the same topic. My suggestion is to let yourself take a break when it gets too dull, but like Ernie said... it won't make a huge difference. Remember, people are looking for solutions to their problems, not amazing writing that pops... Just my 2 yen.

Definitely, its really good tactics. I think, you have published your 30 articles on single article directory. I think, you don't need to write more article right now. You should try to publish your articles on different articles sites.

    30 articles in 3 Days?!?!?
    How?why?
    Explain pls.
I know that you pick a niche then a product from i.e. clickbank write an article, put it in Ezine also in other popular article directories, submit it in social bookmarking sites.
You write 1 article for ezine,a second one for ALL the rest of article directories and a 3rd for your landing page ,which is usually a free blog from wordpress or blogger.
Why so many in one niche(the product in this case)?

I'm not exactly sure what he done as he didnt exactly make it crystal clear in the op.

If i had 30 different keywords i was targeting for the same niche i would write 30 different articles, i wouldnt write just 1 article then re-write it to fit the other 29 keywords in.

i would then submit all 30 articles to the top 10 directories or so but thats just me. If i was using an auto submitter then i would submit all 30 articles to as many directories as the submitter would let, but i dont use a submitter at the moment

    Thanks,
    Hey,

Firstly congratulations on your sale and the number of articles you have got out there in a short time.

I can relate fully to the problems you face as i have the same myself everyday!

Here is what I do to stop your articles becoming stale:

    Change the format:

So if you were writing 3 tips on "yoursubject" - as one of your articles - now write 3 more and focus fully on one of the tips.

Next look at all the problems in the niche and focus on one at a time.

So you could have dog training, "how to stop my dog pooping", how to stop my dog barking etc...

Mix and match your articles talk about the top 2 or 3 problems in your niche.

Write from a different viewpoint, not just from yours - do a case study, deal with numbers and facts.

Anyway you can change it round and make it more fun.

I know what you mean though mate!

Good luck with it and keep going and hope there is some tips there that you can use.

@gkutz1, yeah but I had a change in perspective after reading some of the post.

You don't have to submit it to multiple directories. You just have to find one that
has strong Google "love". Though after I've finished 70 more I will submit it to
several article directories for added exposure and create web 2.0 properties with it.

30 articles are still to many. You could just stuff in as many keywords you can in each articles so you write less.
Btw which link do you post on social bookmarking sites, Ezine's Article or The landing page's?
I'v heard its better to put Ezines articles cause if the article gets lots of views it is shown in the "most viewed" section, and since most traffic you will get is from ezine i think its the way to go.

its not better to stuff as many keywords in as possible. If you target 30 main keywords and write 1 article for each keyword then straight away you have 30 links pointing straight to your money page or landing page. Thats presuming you only submitted to EZA. If you wrote less articles you would have less backlinks. And as for stuffing keywords, you are better off targeting 1 main keyword per article and sprinkle in a few LSI keywords per article

I link all articles to my landing or money page and not back to EZA, afterall, its your own site that you want to rank in the long term, not EZA's or any other directory.

Yeah, but am not sure how much useful are backlinks from the same site repeatedly,i don't think google would appreciate it.
And lemme ask you,are you submitting the variations of the niche's article in Ezine with the same account?
Did reviewers rejected any articles for being similar with previous ones?Because if you're writing on one niche over and over again articles will look pretty much the same after some point, depends. How much different you're making them?
          Unless i overestimated eza.

LSI sounds cool though, cause i've also heard that repeating the main keyword too many times wont do any good and LSI keywords are helping your article to look more natural thus ranking you higher for your main keyword.

I link all articles to my landing or money page and not back to EZA, afterall, its your own site that you want to rank in the long term, not EZA's or any other directory.
It think it would serve the people who don't have their own domains but yeah,if you own a domain its always better to use backlinks to your advantage.

Ive only got 1 ezine artciles account. None of my articles get rejected because they arent similar. As ive already said, if i have 30 keywords, i will write 30 unique and individual articles. I dont just write 1 then re-write the same article 29 times for the remaining keywords

The reason your later articles sound dull and uninspired to you is because
        you're too close to them.

It's the same with me when I write a song. After doing so many takes and
adding tracks and hearing that song over and over again, I eventually am
        sick to death of it.

But when somebody hears it for the first time, it's new to THEM.

If your articles are well written technically, the person on the other end
will not find them as dull as you do. If they get the info they need out of
        them, that's all that matters.

I've written over 2,000 IM related articles and I gotta tell you, I can't
remember the last time I wrote one that really turned me on.

But I still get 10 to 20 opt ins per day.

        So who cares?

What Steven has mentioned actually makes a lot of sense. You have been writing on the same subject for a few hours a day, and are doing this on an ongoing basis. Eventually you will grow sick and tired of literally writing the same thing, but in 100 different ways.

What may seem boring and mundane to you may come across as unique and interesting to someone reading it for the first time. So it's more a case of keeping yourself motivated rather than overly worry about the content. As long as your articles are technically correct and provide decent information, they will still do their "job".

What I often do for added inspiration is open a new gmail address and set up a google alert based around a few keywords. After a day or 2 (depending on the subject matter and niche) your inbox could be full of "new", relevant and up-to-minute information. I find that after spending an hour or 2 reading through my alerts numerous ideas pop into my head for further articles on my subject matter.

          Cheers

IMHO you are doing a mistake here.. you must start tracking the clicks and conversions...

to say the least.. instead of redirecting to the sale pages put them under a squeeze page... in my experience if you start building a list you will make 5x the times of money you would be making now

people rarely buy things first time they see it... stats and many many case studies have proven that.. warriors swear by it..

    so build a list..

I used keywords in my titles and body.
I uploaded each article as soon as I finish it.

I redirected the articles straight to a sales page. No sign-up forms.

Just before the third day was about to end, I was surprised to see a

    How do you solve this.

some of the way to get inspiration in writing articles is that, you try to find the same articles already written that is on the same niche you wanted to write on and you read them and study them and after you might have reading for the second time, you find pleasure in writing your own modernized articles

Simple, pay somebody to write them for you. Your spirit will be very much alive when you spend your day doing more productive things.

Yups I had an average of ten per day. Actually I could have done much more if I gave it laser "focus" instead of writing for about 30 minutes and then taking a break for an hour or two.

Now, here's the thing, the common consensus here is to write for EzineArticles.com but in this experiment what I did was look for a less regulated site with PR6 that also ranks within the first page for search terms. I must admit I wasn't able to beat those EzineArticles on the top of the search but for some of my terms I was just below them while on some I was on top, and that is without back-linking or bookmarking just pure Google "love".

The primary reason why I tried something different is because I was thinking that with all the articles uploaded and back-linked at EZA
there was no way my articles could rank with so much competition
from the same site, and Google would only return two results max
from the same site so I tried to post my articles somewhere else.

Now, to give you an idea where you can post, here are some sites
that's getting SE exposure : ArticleBase, Goarticles, xomba, and hubpages.
I'm not saying I'm using one of these, but I just want to give you
      an idea.

I tried using article spinners once but didn't like what was produced so
      I didn't bother at all.

However, I haven't tried article spinners using {this syntax|this technique} yet. I heard the output is more readable.

Maybe will try it on upcoming campaigns on other niches. Will just have to finish this.

      --

As a final note I would like to give this advice to those who are asking what I did in my article marketing test.

      1. Look for a niche. Finding a hot niche is not hard. Just observe what's being largely promoted.

      2. Get the keywords for that niche. Just fire up Google keyword tools and get a list of the keywords.

      3. Look for high ranking sites to post your content. Check out the search engine and observe the sites that always gets to the top of Goog. In my case I looked for a less regulated site so I don't have to worry for approval, etc.

      4. Read your materials, so you'll know what to write.

      5. Write, take action.

That's it. Nothing out of the ordinary.

      Best,

To all of you saying 30 articles is too many; I completely disagree. How do you have 'too much' marketing? Too many traffic sources? If what you're doing is making money, do it ten more times. I will suggest that you shift that traffic to build a list, but whatever works for you.

As for keyword stuffing, if you have the skill two write an article around 3 keywords without making it sounds like garbage, go for it. However, that is difficult, and you're missing out on two more traffic sources.

And 10 articles a day is great is you're typing them; if you have a speech tool, 10 articles should take about an hour. Hope that helps someone :-)

    Congratulations But...

you need to focus on conversion before pulling out the 100 articles,

1.capture the emails, offer a free report, this can increase your conversion by xxx%
    2. find on which keyword the sale came from, and find the article that generated the sale, create more content around this keyword and others related keywords

Congratulations on your sale, many newbies still struggle to make there first sale especially with articles. I am not saying your a newbie, I am just stating that newbies dont take action and that's why they get no results.

I try to write articles in sessions, start with getting down some good titles - and then move on from there.

One thing I also struggle with is staying motivated and enthusiastic when writing, I dont write when I dont feel like it because the results always shows it. A sale or even a comment on my blog is definitely a big motivator!

As mentioned above a "speech to text tool" is a cool way to write without writing.

In addition to going to sites like answers.com, have you tried the Google Wonder wheel?

If not, go to the Google homepage, conduct a search with your seed word or phrase, then in the new, left side column, open up the More Search Tools dropdown. The Wonder wheel is there. It’s a great way to find new sub-topics.

Separately, there is an alternative to writing 100 low-quality, article-spun articles.

How about writing just 10 REALLY GOOD articles?

If they are good, you can get them shared far and wide through Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Propeller, Reddit and so on.

Your 10 good articles will get you as much or more exposure than 100 poor articles. And you’ll increase your reputation and credibility at the same time.

      Hey man,

Ok. So far I've written a total of 60 articles already
and uploaded them to the site.

      No additional sales yet.

It's already the 31st here, a few more hours and the month
will end, I didn't meet my target of 100 articles till the end of this
      month, I'm 40 articles behind.

I think I'll have to extend it by two or more days to finish the total goal.

After this I think I have to bookmark the articles because I've seen
some that are falling in the serps. I still have some in the first page
but the last time I checked others are falling off the 2nd to 4th page.

Hence the need to bookmark. As planned I will also submit it to other
directories and build web 2.0 properties with it.

      Wish me luck,

        Hi Pradeep,

As I mentioned in my first post. I linked directly to a sales page.

If you are submitting to EZA and you are promoting your own
product, then you can link directly to a sales page.

However, if you are promoting an affiliate product, you'll either have to
get your own .info or other top level domain, or build a web 2.0
property and redirect to the affiliate product from there.

I haven't tested this things out since I didn't use EZA for this
        test.

One last thing, I don't know if it will help you a lot with your
grammar problem but try using Word it has a built in grammar
checker. It will even help you with correct punctuations and
spelling. It's what I use and it helps me a lot in that area.

Great thread. Thanks for sharing your experiment and congratulations on the sale. I had 1 question and 1 comment. The question is do you think your results would have been better if you HAD used EZA? I know you went with a comparable PR on the article source you used. Just a thought.

The comment is that there's a guy named CJ who outlined a similar strategy in an article marketing thread here. He used blogger, CB, EZA and an info domain for redirecting to his CB product. They pulled the thread for some reason (not related to him). But if I remember right he suggested writing 30 articles. His strategy was to put the articles on the blog. then write a review of the CB product. Put links to the new domain in the info box on the review and on every 5th article. THEN zap 10 articles at a time to EZA with a link to your blog and a link to your domain in each resource box. After EZA published them he'd submit to some other article sites. He did other stuff too like finding related blogs and commenting with a link to your domain in your sig. Commenting in related forums was another strategy. He seemed to feel to could make $500 a month after 2 months with this strategy (assuming good keyword selection etc)

All authors have the same problem. At a certain point we have already explained and repeated many times the same things, analyzing different perspectives, more details, etc. So, we really have nothing else to say about this topic.

The best solution is to change topic and start writing about something else, related to your niche. If you don't have this knowledge, you can simply read all the information available online, and then rewrite everything in your own words, adding your comments and conclusions.

Another good way to find inspiration is to simple read many articles about your topics, written by other authors. This method is very effective. You will always feel that you can say the same things much better. You can relate the information you'll find, and make a good combination in your own style.

Of course, you'll have to waste time reading... but it works.

Another good idea when you feel that you are only writing the same things over and over, and you are fed up, is to simply stop for a while. Stop writing. Do something else.

After resting for a while you'll have time to think and prepare your next articles.

It helps a lot if you'll keep a file with all the ideas for good titles that come to your mind. Later you can look for these ideas for titles and develop your articles.

A very good keyword tool is Market Samurai. It has a free trial that never ends; you don't need to upgrade. It is very objective. You have to watch all the videos in order to learn how to use it, but you'll certainly feel grateful for having learned how to use this tool in the end.

It shows you what kind of keywords will bring you interested customer, and not only curious visitors. Here is the download link:

    http://www.marketsamurai.com/dl-1SQdPk5zP_hU-pNLm76O6J

Write your articles based on the keywords you'll find with this tool.

I learned how to write only articles that will bring me constant traffic for years, instead of disappearing after their first days of publication, like most articles do...

It's really wonderful when an article written three years ago keeps sending a certain amount of daily visitors to your websites! Try writing articles that will remain online and will bring you always many customers instead of writing thousands of articles that are not good enough, and will send you traffic only for a while.

    All the best!

Just remember it's all about the click or you wouldn't be doing it. Do whatever it takes to get the click.

    keyword research
    350 to 450 words
Use the BIO box to promote the click not your ego
Submit to ezines first then the rest
Try submitting to Web 2.0 sites like hubpages and squidoo
Always read the TAC to find out what you can and can't do (you'd be suprised what you can do, there's alot of talk on this forum that's simply untrue, for example you can link directly to your affiliate page through ezines, check out the TAC to find out how!!)
Finally, it's all about the numbers -write, write, write. If you've not written at least 250 articles on your niche you haven't given it the time it needs.

To be honest your losing out on a lot of sales. 100 articles, you should be directing them to a squeeze page first, even if it is your own product. Not many people buy straight off the cuff, there are some niches with desperate buyers that its worth linking directly however. You could easily have a list with a minimum of 300 subscribers at this stage! Just my thoughts. It really is important to build a list, that way that one sale could turn into 2 to 3 over the next few months from just that 1 person alone.

Article marketing is awesome, but if you don't promote those articles and build back links they will gradually lose ranking and sales will die off even if the articles are optimized because other people are writing new optimized articles every day. I have noticed this with my articles. I can get on the first page of google, but then I need to continue to promote my article or at least build back links or eventually I lose ranking. I found that if you interlink some of your aricles this helps quite a bit. If anyone knows of a different tactic for holding your rank, please let me know! I will link some of my articles up with examiner articles because I am paid on page views for those.

I do not mean to tell you how to run your business, but I would have been using those articles for lead generation. When people get sent to a sales page for clickbank products it takes some of them 200 views to get one sale. Some sales pages take even more, I think it is much better to get them into your content in some way first. Once you are able to do this and use the content to get them in a certain mindset, then it will be easier for you to recommend other products to them. My goal would have been at least 100 leads for those 30 articles. If I got that I would be doing backflips.
