Why do people opt in twice?

In my iContact records, I've noticed a number of people who seem to opt in twice using different email addresses. Every once it a while it seems to be because they typoed, but most do not fall into that category. The ones I've noticed have opted in for the second time immediately after opting in for the first time (in other words, they show up one after the other in the records).

I'm curious: Why do people do this? Anyone have any ideas?

I've done that before. Sometimes the confirmation email doesn't come through within a few minutes, so I try again using a different email address. Most often this happens if I'm trying to sign up with a Yahoo address or something.

That might be one reason for folks signing up twice in a short period of time.

Yahoo is really bad about letting emails get through.

I've opted in twice to a number of services. Usually software download ones - I find what I want to download at work during my lunch hour, subscribe to test it out on my work pc... I then go home that same evening and google the name of the software/website again. subscribe again using a similar sounding hotmail (personal) account. I can't tell you how useful it is for subscription sites to send me a "here is the download link again if you need a reminder" email! Saves me having to re-subscribe at home. That might explain some double subscriptions? Maybe an idea to send that small reminder, if you aren't already.

And if you are... I don't have any better explanation.. that's just why I've done it sometimes in the past

If it is a double click issue, or too long of a time to receive the initial email, that could be the result as mentioned. The reason for the different email is they can not use the same email as the system will tell them they are already subscribed.

Other reasons could be someone puts in a fake email to see if they get the goods for free anyway on the next page. If not, they go back and enter a real email address.
