    Pros:

    - No bookkeeping for the owner of the affiliate program, as affiliates get paid directly from the consumer.

    - Affiliate gets paid directly from the consumer, instantly.

    Cons:

    - Affiliate program owner must be responsible for refunds, if the affiliate who received the payment does not provide the refund.

      Gene,

Why would the affiliate program owner have to be responsible for refunds if the affiliate was paid instantly by the consumer? Except for great customer service on the owner's part, of course (as I state a little lower in this post).

Here is the way I do things...

First, I'm not a legal expert or lawyer by any means and I may not be 100% correct in my views so please correct me where I'm wrong...but be prepared to show me why.

On ALL my affiliate sign up pages, I have terms and conditions that state plainly that if you become an affiliate and my product offers a refund period/policy, that you as the affiliate that was paid directly by the consumer are responsible for honoring that refund policy as it is stated on the sales page. When you sign up to be an affiliate and click submit, you "agree" to that term...that you will, in fact, honor the refund policy.

The terms also state that should you refuse to honor the refund policy for any reason, and if the policy says the customer qualifies for a refund, then you forfeit your rights to be my affiliate on that and "any and all current and future products" of my company. This means that your affiliate id gets removed from my system on any product you signed up with me that had agreed to those same terms and conditions during the sing up process and it also means that you no longer get commissions on any products that you have been promoting. You would also be banned from promoting any products I released in the future.

I realize this is a hard stance to take with affiliates, but just like spamming (which is also covered under my terms and conditions), it is a stance that has had to be taken for the integrity of my products and affiliate programs, my current and future affiliates, my company, and most of all...my customers.

Now, if it does happen, I have no problem honoring the refund policy for the customer myself (and that is probably where your "Con" came in there, Gene)...and here's why:

Because all of that affiliates' traffic that may be coming in from his/her current promotions will revert to my merchant id rather than the affiliate, since he/she has forfeited the affiliate status once held by violating my terms and conditions. Sure, I might get the short end sometimes as far as the immediate profit goes, but I'll always come out ahead with my customers by honoring it myself and they'll be my customers in the future too. Do you think they will buy from that particular affiliate again in the future if he refuses to honor a policy stated on the sales page? I wouldn't think so.

Does all that make sense? LOL I sure hope so.

Now, the one major Con that I have always struggled with on these programs as an affiliate program owner is that in order for the affiliate to get paid, there has to be at least 2 sales made (if the commission is less than 100%) and then always favors the merchant.

Of course, if the affiliate was paid first and the rotations were backwards, I guess it would be a Con that the program always favored everyone BUT the merchant. That's one of those can't win for losing scenarios, I guess.

I'm sure other marketers have their own opinions about these, but I personally look for Instant Commissions programs first before promoting anything because I hate to wait for my money. LOL

I know a lot of people that feel the same way and even some that won't promote anything except Instant Commissions programs.

      Here's the main thing though......

EVERY Affiliate Program or Software/System will have its own set of Pros and Cons, so it's best to choose what works best for you and your business or situation. Sometimes you will even go through a few different options before settling on the one you like best.

Ok...I'm done with my long-windedness. It's a good thing that I don't post often, huh? I've been on the Warrior Forum FOREVER (ok, only since 2005) but still have very few posts and now I think I remember why. Once I start, I can't shut up.

      Later Days,

I run a few startups that address critical business problems. PM or Skype me about joining my direct affiliate programs. My products are business continuity and customer testimonials. Both are unique.
