Bloggers, Don't EVER Post This! Here's Why...

I blog quite often and I was shocked when I mistakenly made a post recently with the words "Blog Spam" in the title.

Wow, it is like the spam bots knew that I was talking about them. They are now coming to my site in droves!

I have to delete a lot of spam each and every day since the post.

Has anyone else had this problem and if you did, what did you do about it?

        Jay,

I suggest that maybe it is a coincidence? How soon did the spam start rolling in after the "blog spam" post? A few minutes? A couple of days?

I used to put up forums on my sites but stopped because in time came the porn jerks spamming for their own silly websites. So, I do understand your frustration. But I've not yet seen that type of spam on blogs.

At first I thought that it was coincidence too but almost all of the spam is coming to that one post. It began a few days after I published it.

Boy can I relate to that!

I eventually made it to the point of having to manually approve each new member, but that can really put a damper on things for folks that are signing up to reply.

I'd imagine it's a whole lot easier to lose a percentage of your visitors that way.

I eventually ditched the forums, for obvious reasons.

Why are you not using spam filtering plugins?

I run a few startups that address critical business problems. PM or Skype me about joining my direct affiliate programs. My products are business continuity and customer testimonials. Both are unique.

Dump whatever captcha solution you are using. It just annoys the real humans. It doesn't even slow most bots down.

Look into "Bad Behavior" it's available for several main blog platforms, and if it isn't available for yours, consider switching. This will stop 90% of the spam bot stuff that blows through your captcha dead in it's tracks. You'll never even see that they were there because it stops them before they can submit the form.

I wonder if the logic behind that is if there are spam comments that blatantly say "spam" in the comments, the blog is usually unprotected... so that's what the bots look for.

Maybe you can screw with someone's blog by sneaking the word "spam" into your next comment on their blog :-)

Oh no, as I said earlier I already have a captcha plugin set on the highest setting but the comments keep right on coming.

I would hate to think of how many I would have without that plugin...

Hmm try a different captcha plugin because whatever the bot is. It obviously has an automatic solver on it.

I added simple maths plugin and never got spam after that.

        Robert,

Fan of a few of your list building tools and plug ins btw.

So I've always thought a great wp plug in would be, one that replaces their spam with a glowing testimonial ... say like from an online database of thousands, and a link to a friend's or "fellow member" of the plug in users club.

Just an idea ... WP Blog Comment Spam Spinner.

I had an old blog I forgot about ... logged in to admin some stuff. 591 spam comments from viagra and pharma. Was comedic really. 1 post had literally 30 backlinks in it to the very same url with 20 different long tail variations of the same keyword.

        Killer SEO! lol

I added a captcha to my blog and all the spam stopped I used to get tons of it but adding a simple captcha nipped that in the bud for me. I know as a blog owner it is annoying as hell!

Just lately, I have been getting ten times the amount of spam to my blog and it is all going to the one post which doesn't have the word 'spam' in it. It is all coming from the one person - 'orgplopins' is the user name. I am getting so much of it that even when I click on that 'empty spam' button, I already have another 10 or 20 waiting to delete.

So I think it might just be a coincidence rather than them picking on the word 'spam'.

If you don't want blog spam, turn off comments. It's that simple.
