Buying new Laptop and pulling my hair Out..HELP!

Im currently in the process of looking to buy a new laptop. First off, im ruling out any mac's because of price mostly.
I almost bought an HP G60 15.6" Notebook, Win 7, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDDVD from qvc for $699 which included photoshop and a free year of antivirus. Almost all reviews were 5 star except for a couple which people complained about the built in cam and speaker. So that brought me to a halt.
Ive been to office depot and best buy today and just confused myself even more.
So, what am i looking for....
-I will be starting back to college this fall so i will need a laptop for it.
-Continuing my education into I.M.
-Taking up photography as a hobby
-Atleast a 15inch screen
-Its gotta be fast wether connected wirelessly to the internet or just in using the operating system
-Built in webcame and speaker
-A nice overall display and comfortable to use.

other then that, i want to stay below the $700 price range. infact, id really like to be somewhere in the $400ish range if possible.
The guy at officedepot said that acers are actually really good computers but because there not that well know people dont buy that many.
Also, i will not buy another gateway.....so any help i would really appreciate. thanks

Sidenote-Im also looking to buy a camera. Not a starter but also not a $1,000.00+ highly proffesional one. Im leaning towards Nikon but also like canon. I want it to take 1080HD video. Also want "rapid fire pictures" where if i hold down the pic button it will take pic. after pic real fast without having to take my finger off the button.

I would think that almost any decent make would be fine for you. I use an Acer, which I bought the day Windows 7 came out last year. Overall I've been happy with its performance, although I had to send it back after 2 weeks when one of the keys fell of the keyboard.

For UK buyers - I bought it in Comet. Never again! The spotty, speechless youth who took it from me when I returned it spent 20 minutes trying to replace the key. He hadn't spoken to me at all - just taken it from me. Finally he uttered the immortal words - "it's broken".

Long story short - I had to return it to Acer myself. No problems there, they collected it, fixed it and returned it.

Whatever you buy, make sure you have an external harddrive and/or online backup service in case the worst happens.

Yes, my brother just bought a new 13inch macbook and loves it but i dont want to spend that much money at this time. plus the fact that alot of software wont run on macs puts me off a bit. maybe down the road when i have more money and can have multiple computers. But thanks for the input. It is a really nice computer!

LOVE my MacBook Pro! Don't forget, you can run Windows on a Mac and the build quality increases the useful life at least 2X.

I USED TO be a big Windows guy and still use MS Excel for heavy number crunching, but most of my stuff is social networking and web-based at this point and Mac accels at that!

Laptops / Notebooks: Colorful, Small, Light Weight | Dell

To be honest, its hard to say...eg. shopping for my wife i would select another since she's a gamer..but you might have other requirements.

But i would def. get one with a bigger display like 17"...i also would get one with Intel Core Duo, plenty of memory (4gb if possible), plenty of HD (400-500gb), win7

Edit: That HP 60 might actually not be too bad if you are ok with a smaller screen. But its on amazon from $500ish. I just cringed at the idea to buy one from QVC

yes i noticed after doing some research the price of the hp was a bit high but i thought maybe it was because it included the photoshop and antivirus for free. Plus i liked the installment payments!
Im really not much of a gamer at all. But the specs you gave me to look for helped out alot. thanks!

            Hi bbminded,

I do not know where you live but I would advice you to go to Amazon.com and in the menu go to laptops and after clicking that click on the "bestseller" link and choose laptops again.

This is what I would look for in a new laptop.

-high resolution (since you will be using it for photo editing)
-Large harddrive and I would preffer a harddrive that rotates in 7200rpm because it will make your laptop quicker.
-wireless should support N or N-draft.
-I would choose Intel over AMD and if possible the i5 or i7 processor.
-Do not forget that you want to have good battery life

            Good luck!

            Jute

Ps. I would also advice you to get a external harddrive and BACKUP YOUR WORK/FILES

That is why you don't buy from QVC.

I've recently bought 2 identical laptops for my kids at Costco, HP Pavilion dv6-2173cl with Windows 7 & 500 Gigs hard drive for $699 each. They seem to love their laptops and so far have no problem.

Actually, I'm writing to say make sure the warranty is long enough. I just sent back my desktop bought in 2008 for hard drive problem and because warranty is still there, manufacturer will replace or fix it free. I didn't buy extended warranty, just utilize the 2-year concierge service offered through Costco electronics program.

    Good luck

well, based on my experience, I will not use Dell any more. In the passing 10 years, I used so many dell laptops (in my department), most of them will break in 3 years. The worst part of the dell is the power supply. for unknown reason, the laptop will fail to recognize it and can not be used to charge the battery any more which is a pain.

    just my experience.

heh...then you didn't have a Toshiba yet. I could spend hours telling horror stories about my wife's. It completely stopped working and refused to turn on for several months WITHOUT A REASON...i had it open many times trying to repair. And after two months where we were convinced it will never work it all of a sudden turned on again and now works like a charm again.

Can I ask an couple of extremely dumb questions.

    1. If you're buying a separate camera capable of video, why do you care so much about the built in camera for?

    2. What do you plan to do with 1080p video anyhow? Unless you're planning on selling Blu-Ray DVD's, wouldn't 720p do just fine?

      Woah.

I just took a second look at that HP G60 you're looking at.

Whatever you do, do not buy that one.

It's got the same silver keyboard mine does (mine is a DV7 btw), and it's got two flaws:

      1. Those reflective keys are a PITA to type on, because the letters on them are virtually invisible in any light. You will need a separate usb keyboard just to do any typing!

      2. That keyboard will scratch the video screen when it's closed. Whenever I travel, I always have to put a dishrag over the keyboard so it doesn't scratch the screen (HP will not cover this under warranty). Major PITA when traveling.

      Get something else.

    HI everyone,
thank you all so much for your help and advise. I actually did get all my shopping done today and so far im feeling pretty good about it.
First off i ended up buying a 15"6 HP DV6-2150us from the local office depot. There price was the cheapest even beating out walmart. They did however try to upsell me on a store warranty that would have costed me $200. I passed because it came with a 1year manufacturing warranty.
Then they tried to push another service on to me for $80-$100. They basically were going to set the computer up for me and take out alot of the software the computer comes with. They also would set it up so that the history and cookies would delete at a certain time. And then last they would install an antivirus program on it. I passed on all because once you add it all up i could have bought a whole other new computer. I do have 14 days to go back to the store and purchase these items so any advise would be much appreciated!? And one other thing they told me was that new computers dont come with a restore disk anymore so if you have a problem you have to bring it in to have them fix it. Is this something new and whats the reason for this??

Now, as far as the camera goes, i ended up getting a nikon D3000 dslr kit which included the lens, bag, slr photography school guide booklet and a 2gb sd card and batteries. I looked all over the place for cameras and ended up buying this one from walmart. My only dissapointments are that it doesnt have a hd video option but rather just a no sound basic video. Also the lcd screen is set in place and cant be moved around. And then the "automatic fire" mode will capture 3 pics a second which sounds awesome and im happy with that, however most all other cameras with that option could take alot more(one point and shoot camera could take over 200pics per second)and some of them were even cheaper.
I could have just gotten the next step up nikon with the extra options but it would have been an extra $300. Plus i already have an older sony handycam that uses those tiny cd's that i still need to learn to use. Also after getting back home i jumped on amazon and bhphoto to read all the reviews and im feeling alot better about my purchase. plus i have 30 days to try it out and see how much i like it!
Oh yea, another thing i noticed about the camera is that it said its compatible with windows xp and vista. Well i just bought a new laptop with win. 7. does that just mean the software it came with will only work on those OP systems and i can just purchase other software like photoshop and it will work or not?

      1. Do not buy any of those 'services' you just described. Just goto hardforum.com and learn how to do that yourself.

      2. Your camera should work just fine with Win7. If you have any problems, simply contact Nikon support, and they should either provide you with Win7 compatible software and drivers, or show you the workaround.

      3. Your HP computer comes with a program that allows you to create a restore disk. If it does fail to work properly, HP will provide you with a restore set free of charge.

ThinkPad - typing on one, own several of them.

My preference is the X-series. Also own some T-series.

They just work...and work...and work. Nothing but love from me for this brand.

Oh, and here's what you hear when you call for support when you call 800-IBM-PERSonal "Your call is being routed to IBM remote technical support center in Atlanta, GA". Well, now it says Lenovo support center in Altanta, GA, but it's not Mumbai or Chennai or Bangalore .

They cost more. They are worth the premium price.

City folk! I just got the 17 inch 11 pounder too, but the exercise can't hurt. Amazing keyboard. Have never used one that I like as much.

Lenovo is one of the most under appreciated brands around here. It doesn't help that people refer to them by different names like 'Thinkpad' 'IBM' etc. They tend to have a quiet recommendation in about every second computer thread, not the Mac mouth style like 'all your problems will be gone.'

They are more expensive, so maybe not for everyone.

Edit: Actually they do have computers right down to the cheap ranges. I wouldn't expect anything special from those.

      Hi Guys

Just my two cents after the fact:

For a laptop, you may want to consider a Toshiba. I have had three of them in the last several years and they are not fancy with all the bells and whistles of HP, BUT extremely reliable and durable. I made the mistake of buying a Gateway laptop (dual core - piece of garbage, only reason I did not stay with Toshiba was I wanted something different than what I used for years). This fall, buying my fourth Toshiba and giving the Gateway to the kids or a poor relative.

For a digital slr, check out the Olympus E series. Overall, somewhat cheaper and lens quality is every bit as good as the popular Canons and Nikons. One of the things that is seldom mentioned about the previous two brands is that the typical camera package sold at Costco, Walmart, etc does NOT normally include Image Stabilized Lenses. Usually there is a premium (minimum $100 extra per lens) to get that feature. Whereas, with the Olympus platform, image stabilization is built into the camera body NOT the lenses. In the long run for the serious amateur photographer who will buy a bunch of lenses, the Olympus system is cheaper than either the Nikon or Canon system. Shop around, sometimes you can find a nice package deal that will fit your budget.

      Hope this helps

      Regards

      Jim R

I'd never get a laptop from Best Buy or Office Depot. A previous poster mentioned Costco, and they can give you a lot of computer for your buck.

Personally, I tend to get a lot of computer stuff from Techbargains.com (a site that aggregates the best tech discounts). They list of a lot of laptops that are all great bargains. I'm in the habit of checking Techbargains at least once daily. Whenever I'm in the market for something, I set an "alert" that will automatically email me if it shows up discounted somewhere.

Well so far its day 2 and im really enjoying my new HP. Also, From what ive seen and used, windows 7 is pretty cool. Alot better then the vista version i have on my desktop!
I havent done much yet with the camera. Im having to charge the battery. Another function i just realized about it that im not so happy about is that when taking a picture you have to look through the eye piece rather then being able to see with the 3inch monitor. Not sure the reason for that.

HP is alright, and don't shop at office depot because you're not getting the best bang for your bucks -- learn from my mistake ...

If you want a laptop with your price range, either go to neweggs or tigerdirect, bother offering good price and the best bang for your bucks.

Worst place to go is office depot, futureshop and best buy is so-so for your money.

IMO, the best "value" for your money is Acer if you're looking for a budget laptop, I have mine for 3 years and it's running fine.

its funny that you mentioned office depot being more expensive because when i went to walmart after purchasing the computer from O.D. it was $100 more expensive for the same exact computer. I looked on a few online sites and couldnt find it any cheaper. Im also still a little hesitant to buy such a large priced item online because if there is a problem its so much easier just to take it right back to the store. But thats just me. im sure ill eventually change esp. if an item is considerably cheaper online!!
