Wordpress Theme Copyright Question...

If I were to take a Free Wordpress Blog theme, modify some of the colors, slightly alter the images and also the php on some pages to suit my needs and add features such as additional sidebars and headings, am I infringing on the author's copyright?

Or have I created my own theme and thus able to copyright it myself?
