What Else Do I Need?

Hi Warriors, just wanted to touch base with everyone. I've been basically using all my marketing skills to promote my new album. (a few may know, I did everything myself, from the music/website to the music video, a complete one man operation). Lately, my online marketing efforts have been focussed on myspace/facebook/youtube, and a little bit of twitter. Things have been picking up steam, but it's not enough to what I need. Myspace seems very saturated. Facebook has been ok. On youtube, my video got a few honors, but not enough to crack the top 5 pages of most viewed. Early on in my venture, I did a press release for my first website, but that didn't really result in too much traffic. I was considering doing a media press release from prweb since you can embed videos, but from the customer examples I've seen, the videos did not have many hits on them, so I take it that would be a waste of time. Aside from online marketing, I'm invovled in promoting the first song through nightclub dj's. Just wanted to know if any experienced warriors had had any other tips that would help me get more exposure

    Heya,

    why don't you contact some local radio stations to get your records aired?

    You might also want to contact some online radio's and popular podcasts from iTunes and such. See if they want to put your music in their streams and downloads. If you can get them to mention your website, even better.

    Be sure to give a more prominent place for the links to your profile sites at FaceBook and such. That's the way to create an audience that comes back to your site. Setup a FaceBook fanpage.

    Last but not least, build a list. Get people to sign up for your newsletter, so they will be notified the moment you update your blog or upload a new video or audio file.

      thanks Dave for the tips. For radio, I guess it's never to early to start. I was hoping to contact them once there was more buzz in the nightclubs. There are quite a few dj's that appear on mix shows, so that would be a good avenue. The problem with traditional radio is that they are owned and operated by a few large corporations, and their playlist reflects the advertisers and major label's needs. For a list, I started building one from ebay sales of my music, but I'll have to look into something better for my main site (I take it aweber is one of the best solutions? Thanks for the tips on the links, but I don't know where else to put them. Right now they are in a widget as the site is built on the wordpress format. Right above it, I have the links to itunes and a music player

    Hey,

    Cheeky video Cool tune.

    My advice is to go viral in Youtube. Crazy interviews, crazy remixed video, whatever gets you viral.

    I have one video non-music market, that got really viral. It's a 1 minute pure stupidity video with no words, sound or graphics, just me acting weirdo.

    People dig different stuff. Try that approach with a really weird/homemade video.

    I worked for many years as a Journalist and some of those years in the entertainment industry. It is not easy. I know of many artists that had MAJOR talent yet did not have the money or the backing they needed to succeed. On that same note, there were many with mediocre talent but had a lot of support. This said, I can say that you have started on the right foot by having local club DJ's play your songs. Try sending demo tapes to different Record Labels. However, before you do so be sure to copyright your songs, if they are original. You'd be surprised how even the big dogs will plagiarize. Local radio stations are an option, however it is pretty hard to get them to play your songs, particularly because of the same copyright issues. Whatever you do, NEVER ever offer money for play. This practice, known as "payola" is illegal and punishable by federal laws. I suggest you put together PR packets in order to send to your local stations. In this packet you will include a Press Release, A bio, an 8x10 photograph and a single. Never submit your entire CD. Only do so if the stations Program Director asks you to come in and they offer a live on air interview.

    The best of luck to you. The music industry is not an easy one, but being on stage has its rewards!

      Thanks Fernando. I'm trying to get it noticed on youtube but it's difficult. I'm going to focus on trying to get the video featured on a few, high ranking websites. I may also go back to making a few short videos per week on my other youtube channel to generate more interest.

      Thanks for the tips. I agree, it is a tough business. As far as record labelsl, I'm not interested in pitching anything to them. They are more likely to sign a very young artist or band as opposed to someone like like me. Radio is tough. Payola occurs at every level daily. The way it works is a major label takes out a certain amount of ads per station, and it is understood that their artists will get played. It generally takes about half a million dollars to break a single on conventional radio. That is why I usually don't worry about it at this stage. If a song generates enough interest online and in nightclubs, it would be in the radio station's best interest to play it (if people want to hear it)
