Product Idea - Maybe Someone Can Do This

I had a flash of inspiration and came up with a product idea, but like many of my ideas I don't have the time or expertise to develop it. Instead of putting it in my someday maybe list, I thought I'd give it out to the forum and maybe someone else can make some money from it.

Problem That Needs Solution:
For people who aren't native english speaker or more specifically american speakers, I hear a lot of fear. They can't write copy and in fact are scared to do any part of the internet business that requires writing (i.e. Autoresponders, Directory listings, classifieds, etc).

Solution/Product Idea:
Create a training course on how to sound American within the written word. It could contain specific examples and things to watch out for (as in things not to do).

This would be a very good project for either someone who has concurred this issue, or someone seeking to concur it and they could document how they did it and then sell that.

I always get excited when I see a problem/need that doesn't seem to be filled. This is even true with an issue like this that seems like it may be difficult to solve.

Oh man, with that course online, certain Nigerian spammers will be unstoppable...
Seriously though, this does sound like a good idea. Lots of potential there!

My problem with this, is that if they truly were scared of how they write and truly wanted to learn for themselves, why haven't they already?

Learning a new language has never been easier, especially with programs like Rosetta out there.

I just don't see why they would decide to pay you, instead of a nationally recognized and establish product proven to work.

The hook is not ESL it's writing for marketing (copy writing) with American sounding English. This is something for someone who already can understand English and get a point across, but doesn't have a skill level to write OK copy.

    Some Domains available...
    EnglishForIM.com
    EnglishForInternetMarketing.com

Even if it was just ESL, it would could be sold well as a niche product for internet marketers, however I'm thinking of it as more of a combination of basic copywriting and ESL. Also, I think the best person to be the face of this product is someone who has figured out how to jump the shark in this area.

      Hello Justin

As an American who has lived in Britain for twenty-five years now, I think yours is a great idea but I don't know exactly how you go about it.

I write a great deal and I enjoy writing. The one book I have published is a management book, but I am now writing copy and I like to write a bit of fiction for relaxation.

Based on my experience, I think your project would need a great deal of thought and work. If I, for example, were to write a manual for Americans trying to write for the British market I would have to research extensively into the differences between American and British idiom and then build all this into my manual (and I now have lived in both cultures for a long time). And all this for two cultures supposedly speaking a 'common language'.

If you want to have some laughs, watch carefully an American film produced in America for an American audience about some British folk doing something in Britain, or vice versa.

Imagine how much more work would be needed to do the same, for example, for someone whose first language is Chinese or Arabic trying to write convincingly for either the British or American market, again, or vice versa.

This is not an excuse not to think about this as a product, it's just my caution that it's quite ambitious (some idiot will no doubt come back with the suggestion you can create a piece of software for about £29 to do this).

I think for this to work, your writer would have to be somebody who has lived for a while in both cultures, for each manual you created.

      Good luck with your project.

      All the best.

      Warmest regards
      Bill

Not an expert myself --- just my pure opinion.

Maybe a guide + practice + peer review, would work. I'm not sure the answer, and I agree 100% that it isn't one of those easy to solve problems. I think the lack of confidence in those effected offers the opportunity. If you could help someone with his/her confidence, it would come through in the writing and help with business in general.

This sounds like an ESL course with emphasis on training them to write and talk like a salesperson/marketer.

I think writing good salescopy is nothing more than having good ideas expressed clearly. I believe that comes from learning basic English properly first. They should understand basic American English grammar and writing first.

Basic Marketing would be an add-on course that teaches persuasive writing. After all, it all boils down to persuasive writing and thinking.

Even native English speakers / writers find it hard to write good copy. Writing copy is a skill of it's own. (In the same way writing a legal contract, or a pop song is a skill of it's own even though it uses the English language).

Yes, let me also add that even many native English speakers have a hard time writing good persuasive copy themselves.

Heck, even many recent American high school grads have trouble spelling, poor sentence structure and grammar.

The cheap trend seems to be for native English speakers to outsource their salescopy/article/marketing content to India, where the majority speak English as a second language.
