Hello,

I recently moved websites to a new hosting company.

The way I had it at the OLD host was:
http://mysite.com

I did all my off page optimization, backlinks, etc. to > http://mysite.com

Now, with the NEW host, it's:
http://www.mysite.com

They don't allow .htaccess to redirect http://mysite.com > http://www.mysite.com

Will this present a problem in terms of none of my link juice will be passed there, or will it?

Thanks a lot!

    Hi,

You can achieve a 301 redirect using a meta refresh if you cannot
use htaccess. Also, you may want to do an undelayed meta refresh,
0 seconds, because otherwise you could raise a flag with certain
search engines if you use a delayed meta refresh.

But you might want to verify if that is still acceptable with G and Yahoo.
A 0 second meta refresh used to be acceptable. It still might be, I just
don't have current information if they changed their policies about it.

If it's still cool to do a 0 sec meta refresh, then you're good and your
juice will be passed no problem.

    Thanks a lot Ken,

unfortunately I sent this to the customer support of my provider, and they are unable to do it because of the "design of their platform".

So now I am guessing that this will hurt me big time, because all of the backlinks I put to the domain WITHOUT the www. won't help me with my new site, WITH the www.

    Am I assuming correctly?

    Thanks again Ken!

I agree with Wags. Even if they don't allow the .htaccess, they should have it setup to point with a 301 redirect when someone puts in the url sans www. If this is a whole site solution that is something you want to use, I would consider registering a new domain to use this system and not destroying the SEO you've already done.

How does that work? With Cloning of course. Watch the free videos at the url above.

Unfortunately, support said : 301 redirects only work when both of the URLs are on the same domain, so it wouldn't be possible to define the address of the redirect with or without the WWW. The www is already assumed to be at the beginning of the address.

So, I guess I am totally out of luck then?

If you're in this for the long term, I think that you should find a new host.

Regardless of the 'perfect' ecommerce platform that your new host provides, they surely can't be unique, there must be others providing the same or a very similar service.

If I were you, I'd start searching now for a more flexible hosting service provider to do business with, not only now, but into the future.

        Just my thoughts,

        Jeff.

So, why did you pick such a miserable host that will not allow you to do even the basic tasks on their server?

Maybe it is time to get a real host...

Thanks for the advice & feedback,

the reasoning behind this host: it's an ecommerce hosting platform, it's absolutely perfect for what I need, and I didn't know that they didn't allow .htaccess until after I set up everything in the store.
