How Backlinks help increasing pagerank?

How Backlinks help increasing pagerank? Does the backlink need to be frequently clicked in order to be seen as a "high quality backlink" that helps the page ranking? or any sort of backlink(even the backlinks that are not likely to be clicked) will work too?

    Hey Jamezun,

To my understanding a backlink is much like a vote that the internet is giving your site. The more votes your site has, the better it is in the eyes of the Search Engines. (Anyone feel free to correct me if I am Wrong).

Backlinks from authority sites (High PR) are worth more then sites that aren't relevant to your content and low PR.

But just remember you always want to keep your backlinks balanced. As in, do a little of everything everyday. Forum Posts, Article Submissions, Social bookmarking, RSS Feeds, ETC. And if you remain diligent in your work, you should see good results.

Goodluck to you and your success!

backlinks helps you rank in the search engines. the more quality backlinks you have, the higher you go. so if you have a lot of backlinks from authority websites and websites with high page rank, you will move up the search engine. some people majorly do that has their traffic method that is target first page on search engines by getting quality backlinks.

It doesn't matter if the backlink is clicked. How ever the more traffic that stays on your site and click any links in your site will help. This is called the click through rate. Here is a site with a list of ways to get backlinks

The most concise way to describe a backlink is a lot like how Jbor defined it: a vote. Basically a search engine only stays in business so long as it can produce relevant results to search queries. How can it do this? A combination of keyword detection algorithms and a lot of social engineering done digitally. The first part just about everyone knows about, because so many people were packing content with keywords for so long that it was ridiculous. This is why the idea of Page Ranks became important: keywords can define what a page is about, but links (and a few other factors) can help a search engine decide how much relative authority a site has.

If a new site has few inbound links (links from other sites referencing a page) then it is not considered to be as authoritative as a site that has many inbound links. This is further complicated because the amount of authority can be affected by the anchor text as well as the relative authority of the site providing the link. There are also concerns regarding the niches of two sites. For example, a muscle car site linking to a site on Camaros probably has far more authority than a link from a site on baking cupcakes to a site on Camaros because of the vast differences in niches and audiences.

A follow vs. a no-follow means that a search engine will include the link in its page rank algorithms. Blogging with no-follow linking essentially means blogging only for traffic, and probably low-value traffic in many cases. Because the search engine sees that the link is no-follow, it will either disregard the link or consider to be of negligible value. The jury seems to be out on this one, but either way it is not that great.
