Linking to other sites

Sorry another newbie question, I have my website up and now I am planning on doing some linking, or backlinking (not sure of the correct terminology or exactly the kinds of links I need ). I have checked out my competitors yahoo links and I have also found some links to sites with PR3 etc. that relate to my niche.

So I now have a list of Blogs and forums, websites related to my niche.

How do I ask a website for a link and what kind of link do I ask for?

Regarding blogs and forums, How do I post on them without spamming so that I can get a decent link to my site.

I do understand that for blogs and forum posts that I need to find dofollow links, and I have a tool for that.

    Hey Paul,

You're right to be considerate concerning blogs and forums. The best way to get links from these is to contribute to the conversations on each one. Find a blog you like and actually enjoy reading and post a comment that adds to the discussion. Likewise with forums.

In terms of getting links from other sites (if they don't have a blog and/or forum) then try three-way linking. Reciprocal or mutual linking (I link to you and you link back to me) doesn't work nearly as effectively as three way linking.

Basically, you or the person you're linking to will need to have more than one site (ideally). Site A links to site B and site B then links to site C, where A and C are owned by the same person. This means everyone benefits from a one-way link and it's a win-win deal for everyone.

Whenever you link, think about what benefits you can give to the person giving you the link.

    Hope that helps.

    Matt

Matt above just answered it 100%.
Whenever using backlinking methods on Forums/Blogs you must NOT add typical spam content to discussions and forums. In some cases with blog commenting your comments must be approved thus the importance lies in the quality and 'content' you are adding to the post itself.

Make useful statements, arise further questions perhaps? just add useful constructive comments which spark discussion.

Thanks for the replies, really helpful. Regarding adding blog comments of forum comments,

how exactly do I leave a link to my website each time I post?

And if I am exchanging links with other websites do I need to set up a links page to

      show the links on?

You can help yourself a lot by looking for places where the links will carry more weight back to your site.

This is as easy as using Google.

You could also do the same but see where your competitors get theirs from.

A search something like this would do it:

    link:Microsoft Corporation -site:microsoft.com (site:edu OR site:gov OR site:ac)

    You get the idea?

This will return all the links from sites which Google considers important (universities, government, colleges etc.) because these sites tend to be created by organisations rather than individuals.

Just substitute Microsoft for the website of the big players in your niche and you can often find some good places to get links from.

about the blog commenting..not all blogs will give you a link google will follow. i mean some blogs are do follow while some are no follow. so if you post on a no follow blog, google will not give you that as a backlink. so to get the do follow blogs you can use do follow search engines like commenthuntdotcom. you just do a search on your keywords and you get a lot of blogs to get comment on which will give you link juice from google. hope this helps too
