Wordpress.com is for free blogs. Not recommended for serious business sites. Wordpress.org has links to install the latest WP CMS and plugins and lots more. Recommended very much!

You need the wordpress.org variant if you're going the self-hosted route.

.org is the actual script that you install on your own site so therefore a no brainer if you want a serious business / blog.

definitely the .org flavor. Let us know if you have any questions getting it installed. Look for a host that offers Fantastico - this allows for installation of WP very quickly.

I downloaded it but can't seem to get it to work and have no idea why?
Do i need to have it hosted before i can start building?(can i build the site/blog before i upload it to a hosting server?)

If you have Cpanel in your hosting, you can install Wordpress "automagically" using Fantastico in Cpanel. This is often called the one-click install.

On some Cpanels, its called "Fantastico De Luxe." It's hard to miss, its icon is a big blue smiley.

The long route of installing Wordpress is to download the zip or tar file from Wordpress.org, unpack the file, upload to your host via FTP, create the database user and database, and then go through the installation process.

Everyone knows how good WP org is....

But I decided to play around with WP com, the step-child of WP org.

It's free (using their domain) so I set up a blog, bought a domain name and started playing around with it...

The other day someone typed in "offline marketing consultants" and it was as they say "first page google" near the bottom. (offlinemarketingstrategies dot net)

However, "offline marketing consultanT (no "s") and it's on 2nd page google.

Believe me, I'm no SEO guy or blog guy but it shows just how on some keywords, you can move on up there using free WP com site. And it took only about 3 weeks to show up.

      Absolutely wrong!
Read the TOS at wp.COM. The free blog hosted by them are NOT for commercial ventures. Period.

.com = the free blogs hosted by Automattic where no commercial stuff is allowed.
.org = the open source free script to dowload to be used on your own domain.

And it will take them one second to delete it if they think it's against their TOS

      Jim -

The only problem with the free Wordpress.com blogs is that you don't own the space - Wordpress does. And they can (and will) delete your blog for anything that violates their Terms of Service, which includes pretty much any kind of blog you derive income from.

You can certainly rank well using these pages, but for long-term, stable businesses, self-hosted Wordpress is a much better choice.

True, I had never worked with Wp before...was just fooling around with it. Heck, I wasn't even aware it wasn't for commercial purposes.
