"Oil Spill" Video pays off AGAIN

I posted a couple of weeks back about how doing a video netted us a free week in a beachfront condo... The video was keyword optimized for people who might be searching for beach conditions in the Destin, Florida area.

Here's a link to one of the videos:
So today - I get an email from the condo association manager: "Need another video update - are you free this weekend?"

I am only 5 hours from the beach. The room on the beach is free for 2 nights and all I have to do is spend 20 minutes making a one or 2 minute video and uploading it to youtube.

Ain't IM grand?

As it turns out, CNN was there filming YESTERDAY saying that the oil would be on the beach THIS WEEKEND and of course I will be there making a video of the fact that there is NO OIL there. (as long is there is NO OIL there of course)

I'M TAKING ON CNN!!!

Fun stuff

While the oil spill itself is tragic and no one hopes for the worst, the fact is that there is no oil at all as you move to the east of Pensacola, Fl. Everything is pristine and open for business and, in my opinion, the public needs to know that.

These videos have already netted us over $4,000 in free condo time, something we would have otherwise had to pay for.

Forgot to add that Youtube just sent me an email offering revenue sharing. Anyone else doing this? Do you make any real money?

Great video. Hope your next one goes well also. That was a great idea to see a need and fill it.

Congrats. I don't see anything wrong with letting people know there are places open for business where stuff is fine as long as it truly is.

This is a great idea. With a little creativity you can get all kinds of free stuff by using our creative marketing minds.

    Good idea man!

      Hi Winebuddy,

It's a way for you to prosper by spreading pure positivity (as long as you don't lie and send people to an oil slick beach by posting last month's video as today's )

Even though you might be getting a 'kickback', you're telling the truth, possibly helping to promote smaller independent businesses, dispelling negative media myths and promoting your country/locality.

...and you end up looking like you're pretty smart as well. Nice work.

That's great, but if cnn says there's going to be oil there this weekend isn't there a good chance there will be? Even if they are wrong about this weekend it sounds like it might be happening soon?

Well pretty sure there is no myth here. I was just doing some reading and people in Destin expect the oil to reach them within 72 hours. So good today may not be so good in a couple of days. I think one has to be very careful not to end up on the wrong side of this. People headed in for a week who see this video and then have oil slicked water in a day or two may not be so amused, you don't look quite so smart and your name takes a hit. Further are we sure the water is safe for young children and older people? Just cause you don't see the pollution it doesn't mean it isn't still going through your skin.

Personally after doing some checking I'd be very hesitant at this point to promote this I think.

People expect that because that is what the news media is telling them. Is it risky for me? YES.

But if people are going to sit around being negative and expect disaster to happen at any time, it would probably be more productive for society as a whole for them to just go to a funeral home and wait.

(not you of course - just negative people in general)

I may have missed something because I haven't watched the video, just read the thread.

Regardless, if he tells them that it's great there today - and he's actually there today, making the film, then he has nothing to worry about.

If he guarantees that it will be OK for any period of time then I can see why it could be problematic.

Therefore I see no reason for him to worry.

As for the myths - well where I live, the media is built on a castle of myths, so it goes without saying that they've got some agenda and that they're using some negative, paranoia inducing propaganda - even if there's no reason to. They do it just because they can, it would seem.

Apologies for the cynicism - they've earned it. Therefore anyone who tells the truth is providing a valuable service to society IMHO - leading by example, waking up the masses to the way that things could/should be.

Today - the beach is clean and open - so come and squeeze some sand between your toes peeps and bring some money for ice lols.

Certainly people have good reason to be skeptical. The news media is rife with false equivalence and shoddy fact gathering. I am just saying for me after I have done some more research I would be hesitant at best.

But that's me and I expect everyone will look at it and decide for themselves. I wish Wine nothing but the best and I really hope it all goes good for him.

I didn't take it personal. I know it's very in to knock the media and god knows they have earned it in way too many cases. But having now spent some more time looking into it, while the timing is open to interpretation, it sure doesn't seem like a case of if but one of when.

Again best of luck sir. I hope all goes well and really I hope everyone is wrong and you make good. I'm a native Floridian who always loved the Gulf beaches.

Hey Mike nice job. Just reporting what you see. To the nay sayers, I guess thats the difference between the do'ers; they see opportunity and grab it, rather than devise every excuse to stand back and well...complain about missed opportunities.

Skip it, with the few thousand views you have, you'll make about $0.05 a day.

Your better off trying to get the condo association or a Destin Visitors Association, etc. to "sponsor" your video, you could put an Annotation to direct viewers to click a link in your video's description, you'll make more.

Skip it? He has absolutely nothing to lose by participating. Just because you may only earn 5 cents a day doesn't mean everyone else does too.

Just be careful about if there really is oil in the water or not. Just because you can't see it does not automatically mean it's not there.

I worked as a Merchant Marine for 15 years transporting oil between refineries. I've seen more than my share of oil spills and slicks. Even with large massive spills you can get small pockets of oil that sit below the surface and can't be seen. The oil even partially disolves and doesn't even leave a sheen on the water. Seeing clear water is not a true indication of the lack of oil in the water, the only way to know that is to test a sample of the water.

As someone with years of experience in dealing with such situations I would suggest being very careful what you say and how you say it.

the other guy that I like is myspacesecrets on youtube, has alot of great stuff.

I think the link is YouTube - myspacesecrets's Channel

He was the guy that called the market crash coming in 2007 and people laughed at him.

He has some interesting videos on this oil spill. One is here -
I like him cause he does talk truth...not the crap that is on CNN.

Actually he does have something to lose...If he applies for the program and is accepted, then the ads that will be shown during his video will be competitors of the condo association that is asking him to make the videos in the first place and also directing people to his videos.

How would the condo association feel if they are directing people to a video and then they see their competition advertising on the video?

Plus, what I stated above is based on actual experience as I have a video in the YouTube Partnership Program in the hotel / vacation niche (I have a video on finding a cheap hotel in New York City). So, I'm just giving Mike my first hand experience on what he would earn.

So, I think it would be better for him to approach the condo association and see if they would like to "sponsor" his videos - he would make more and it would continue the direct relationship they already have.

Black Hat Cat - if you have some experience with the YouTube Partnership Program then by all means share it, the more direct knowledge the better as it would help Mike decide what he wants to do.
