Market Research Question - How to Get Detailed Feedback (Without a List)?

I'm currently planning to create a product in a niche that I don't have any lists or sites in, yet.

Now, I would like to get some very specific feedback about the needs and fears of the people in this niche. Usually, if i have a list or a site in a niche, I would just do a survey to get some very concrete answers and get a good idea of what to base my product around. But without a list, I don't know how to get feedback like that.

Do you have any strategies and suggestions? I'd love to hear how other marketers go about this kind of thing.

Just to be clear: the "basic" market research stuff like checking out popular searches, looking through forums, checking out 43things etc. doesn't give feedback that is detailed enough, in my opinion. Or perhaps I'm doing it wrong?

I would of said finding some niche focused forums and asking for reviews of your site, or even giving away review copies of your product and asking for honest feedback rather than hyped reviews, but if this isn't enough then perhaps you could actually contact other people in the niche - not exactly competitors as they are unlikely to help you, but perhaps well known bloggers / authority sites etc.

Offer something free on the back end of a survey and buy some PPC ads.

I did an SEO survey with WSO traffic and I got some great responses.

My approach would be to set up a mini blog with a link to a survey and a name capture and direct traffic to there. If you proceed you will at least have a list and traffic going to it.

You've given me some great ideas. Approaching bloggers, running a survey on the backend of a product and setting up a small site to get some initial prospects are all great suggestions and I think I'm going to do all of the above.

Shane,

how about purchasing solo ads from people who have
a list in this niche you're after and offering a survey.

If not, try going to amazon and looking through
books that come up in the search results for your
target keyword.

Then, go to the "reviews" section and read all the
positive and negative reviews about the topic.

Knowing what people liked about a specific book and
what hated will give you a detailed look inside the mind
of your prospect.
