PayPal - what is a skipped payment?

I've finally opened my first membership site (yay!).

I gave my susbscribers a 7 day free trial, and after the 7 days were up 45-50 payments were supposed to go through.

However, out of those payments, 3 payments were not processed by PayPal.

The subject of the email I got from PayPal was: Payment Skipped

In the body it said: "We cannot process the following recurring payment. We will try again in five days. " with the product and buyer info.

One of those people contacted me complaining that he couldn't get into the site. When I asked him to check his PayPal account he said "everything looks ok on my side".

So - what is a skipped payment? Why does it happen? And is there a way to avoid it?

For the most part it means there was a problem processing the payment. Either PayPal had an issue or the credit card/checking account that the money is coming from had a problem. This can also happen if someone has their account set up to process the payments through an echeck but no money in their checking account.

If you have a free trial set up then they will initially get access but once the first payment comes due it will trigger a non payment since there is no money in the bank account to cover for the regular subscription payment.

PayPal will usually try to process the payment 3 times before it is considered a failed payment.

Subscriptions all have a unique, individual backup funding source. If that funding source is invalid, weird things can happen - from payments not being made to subscriptions being cancelled. Have your customers check their backup funding on the subscription and make sure it's a valid source that has not expired.

      Hi Sara,

It is normal for skipping payment if the person who is getting the product has insufficient fund in his credit card or in his paypal account. It happen to me once cause my paypal account amount is not enough to buy a product from Amazon.

Over here i cannot top-up my paypal therefore i had to purchase my own affiliate product and top-up. That way i finally made the purchase. This is one way to top-up.

Whoever trying to subscribe to Sara's easy paycheck formula, please check your credit card or paypal account.
