Hubpages vs buying a domain

Hello all,

This is my first post. I stumbled across affiliate marketing by accident a few days ago and I have done nothing but read this forum since.

I read a thread last night that I can't seem to find now where someone describes how they make a hubpage(another thing I only just discovered) with niche keywords in it to test the water. I am hoping someone can answer a few questions for me.

I'm trying to learn all the lingo so bare with me while I try and ask my questions!

I have spent all day thinking of what my first venture could be and I have come up with a 4 word phrase, it is a niche market and the product isn't even on sale yet.

I check in google keywords tool and it says that monthly search is 170, no bar for competition and Avg.CPC is 0.04.

So I am assuming those statistics are pretty rubbish, but should I expect that for a product not yet released?

Should I go and buy a domain name in the style this-is-the-name.co.uk or should I make a hubpage up first?

Another problem is that I can't seem to find anyone that sells this product who is part of an affiliate marketing scheme, should I still go ahead and hope that I can find one later when the product arrives?

The product is low costing £50 so with what I can see the average commission is about 5%, that's not a lot of money unless I get a lot of traffic.

These are probably all obvious questions but I find that when I am reading the posts a lot of people expect a certain level of knowledge and I'm not sure of some of the basics.

Thanks

  • I am also just starting out, so I will watch this thread as well. I have many of the same questions you do.

I have a question though. Are you talking about a product that hasn't been released yet? Is it something Amazon or similar platforms will sell? I can't imagine anyone will be able to answer your questions if you don't give a little more information.

Thanks for starting a thread like this.

The product is just being advertised and any of the places that I can find online who are selling similar products have it listed as coming soon. The first problem I have is that none of these retailers are, as far as I can tell, part of any affiliate network.

When I search google the number one site is someone who happened to write a couple of lines about it in a blog, I checked the website and from what I have read on here I think it would be easy to get higher by using the product as the url and having the first page as a article dedicated to it.

I have just thought of another question as I'm typing, I wonder if I did buy the domain name would I have to write more than one page of content. There isn't really much to say about this product, anyone searching for it is going to know exactly what it is.

If you believe in the future demand, I would buy the domain names regardless. If worst comes to worst, you can always flip them if the product you are talking about is indeed going to be popular.

Hubpages is great for trying out new topics, but one thing I've noticed is that there's a limit to how many great pages you can write in a single niche, especially with long tails.

I have 150 hubpages and a hubscore of 96. I am getting better at predicting good hubs, but a lot of trial and error is involved. I have found some surprisingly nice niches in the most obscure areas.

So my advice is write hubs to test topics, then build 100 page micro-sites for stuff that has good traffic, eCPM and CTR.

One top secret tip from me is that hubpages appeals to women. I don't know why this is, but the best hubber are women. Hubs about womens/kids topics are usually epic wins.

Buy a domain name hands down, don't be at the mercy of third party sites that can shut you down (see squidoo)

Hubpages has made me a lot of money in affiliate commissions so they do convert well I have 90 hubs. The problem is if you are not building backlinks to your hub the traffic is very hit and miss. You will have quite a few visitors one day and then go on a dry spell unless your backlinking your hubs. At least that is my experience.

If I had to offer you any advice it would be to do both try a hub out and monetize it. Buy a domain name and start a blog and add good relevant content regularly. It should not be too hard to dominate the search engines and rule your niche.

    Good luck!
