Someone wants to buy domain - what should I ask?

Hi all,

I received an email from someone who wants to buy a domain I own saying they have more than 10 years experience in the domain brokering industry and see a potential value in the name. I did a quick google search for online valuation estimator tools just to test it and all came up value of $0.00. The domain is just sitting idle right now and I was hoping to develop it at some point, but if they think it's valuable, should I name an inflated figure for starters or will that scare them off? I wasn't even thinking of selling and since they approached me I want to reply properly so any suggestions are appreciated.

Regards,

You have to think what the domain is worth for you and ask them to make an offer and if you are happy with the offer you might as well sell it. You can also list it on namepros.com for an appraisal but it is not always so accurate.

STOP. You've likely received a scam offer. This has been going around for years. If you reply, they will ask you to get an appraisal first. That's all they are interested in -- selling appraisals.

Yes Gene Pimentel is right about the domain appraisal scam that is happening. Someone contacts you and they show interest in your domain name and they say they really want to buy it and might offer you more than a reasonable price but then they say that you should get it apprised before they can do the transaction and they would recommend you appraisal service that can cost up to hundred dollars. Once you get the domain apprised and pay the money the buyer disappears.

Wow, didn't know that was happening. Will take heed of warning. Even though I wasn't thinking of selling, I admit I got a little excited at potentially making some money from it. So best advice is not to reply and let it go. Should I decide to sell, maybe go to Sedo since they are more reputable correct?

While it is necessary to be aware of the existence of scams, also be aware that there are legitimate offers that may come your way. About three years ago, I got another random offer for a domain name that I had parked; I responded as I do all of them. I asked them to make an offer, with the added warning that I would not, under any circumstances, pay for an appraisal. Oddly enough, we kept corresponding, they made an offer, and I eventually sold it for $900. (And they aren't even using it anymore. Go figure.)

Also, always always have them make the first offer. The first person to mention a number, in any negotiation, always loses. (Case in point: The domain I mention above, I never would have had the nerve to ask for $900. I made them make an offer. So glad I did.)

You could always reply back and tell them to make an offer. As soon as they mention appraisal ... tell them to bite me. I can conceive of getting an offer via email or of offering someone money for a domain via email without it being a scam, however, it is usually a scam.

You need to do some basic background checks on this potential buyer. Just do some searches in Google for their name and email address. If they're a scam it's likely someone has posted their info at one of the domain forums.
