Is the $1 Dollar Membership Sign Up Worth It?

Hello fellow warriors,

I'm thinking of trying the $1 dollar membership sign up. You know, where they can try my stuff out for a week before commiting to the full monthly membership.

Anyone else have any success with this? Specifically, are you seeing them come up, get the free stuff and run? Or are you seeing a healthy conversion?

I am in the middle of testing out the $1 trial now.

I have been doing it now for about 1 month and I can say that my conversions are much better. I am getting some people who will cancel their membership before the trial is up, but not all. I do not have the biggest membership base, but I am probably going to stay with this model for the time being.

You will have to watch out for people who will do the "trial", cancel their membership and then sign up again and do the "trial" again. This has already happened to me on a couple of occasions.

I would say that you should test out both methods, but in my short experience the $1 trial works.

      Good Luck.

depends on how you are charging that dollar. if its $1 charged to a credit card, then lot of people will stay away form it thinking that its just a way of collecting the credit card number and they will be charged full membership price if the forget to cancel. lot of people these days dont like to give out credit card numbers for such memberships. if paypal payment however, you might be able to get some memberships. then again it depends on which industry you are targeting and whether members you are targeting will have paypal or not. just give it a try and see how it works.

You're right, a majority will cancel.

But the way this marketing model is played is you use the $1 trial to get a mass of people to join.

Then even if you have 10-30% who stick for at least a month it is a good result.

If you get 1,000 members using the $1 trial then $97/month there is zero chance you will be earning $97,000/month regardless of how good your product/service is.

If you've provided top class material during the trial maybe 25% will stick around for at least one more month.

It would usually look something like this over 6 months:

      $1 trial: 1000 members
      1st $97 payment: 250 members (75% drop off)
      2nd $97 payment: 125 members (50% drop off)
      3rd $97 payment: 62 members (50% drop off)
      4th $97 payment: 43 members (30% drop off)
      5th $97 payment: 34 members (20% drop off)
      6th $97 payment: 27 members (20% drop off)

So after 6 months you would have made:

      ($1 x 1000) + [(250+125+62+43+34+27) x $97] = $53,477

In the fantasy world where people don't take into account people who drop out (like in the fancy sales letters saying you can retire on membership sites) you would have made $97 x 1000 x 6 = $582,000 in the first 6 months - and would have a $97,000 income for the rest of your life.

Sounds good, but as an experienced marketer I'll tell you straight - this isn't reality.

In the real world, it usually plays out like the first example IF you provide a great quality service/product, if you don't then almost everyone will be gone before even the first $97 payment.

But if you do provide a great product/service, and you get a similar result to my example (over $53k in 6 months), you have to bear in mind you have essentially made the same amount of money as selling 1000 products at $53 each.

So the question is ... which is easier, selling 1000 $1 trials or 1000 $53 products?

Ultimately, this is why many people do it.

It is because it is usually much easier to sell 1000 $1 trials.

@OnePlusOne - But again you need to get new visitors to maintain your earning which is really hard.. unless your service or product is good.

It depends. If you trust the seller, why not?.

    Hiya

    I agree with Marcel.

Not because I also have a membership site, but because I am talking as a potential customer.

I would like to try out something for $1 or less before commiting to a monthly billing payment.

$1 from a buyers perspective having the ability to purchase a trial of $1 for say a week is very effective from my point of view, I would happily fork out that amount then either continue/cancel after the time frame is up.

In essence as some of you have said it works and converts well.

Currently testing this right now, just coming off the trial phase in another week, so we've been watching conversions from right before we went on the trial, during the trial and will watch after the trial - surprisingly so far it didn't look like too much of a drastic increase (or decrease)

Since there are so many cancellations on this, why
don't you just give them a sneak peak or a part of the
whole thing when they join as $1 trial member.

And as soon as they upgrade-show them everything else.

I would go with if you are running a membership site where the 1$ users can see a part of your stuff, just to get a feel for what you have to offer while hiding the important or the "meat" of your product. I've done this a couple of times where I offer them a little but once they get in for the full price can have unlimited access to everything.

Just a bit offtopic but I find after testing that a video explaining to trial members what they get and what they can get if they go for the full membership works effectivily.

Excellent breakdown oneplusone as samuel said but we forget to mention that as time passes you will get more members joining in. Even more if there was some sort of affiliate program set up.

It will be beneficial to make assumptions and predictions for members joining INTO the program as well as leaving, to make best use of the prediction model, need to incorporate both ways.

Our $1 for 1 week trial premium membership is working very well for us. It gives people a chance to see what's inside the premium membership. They can then decide if they want it or not. Not all who sign up stay on but a vast majority do. For those who stay on, we are more or less sure that what we offer is what they want.

There is something else to consider...the structure of your membership.

If it is an ongoing service, such as like with an autoresponder service, where
if they cancel they lose the service, yes, it could be worth it.

However, if it's a site like where you offer niche packages each month and
members get access to all previous packages, then no.

What will usually happen is that the member will suck all that they can out
of that $1 (download as much stuff as they can) and then be gone. It is
doubtful you'll get many to stick around UNLESS you can show that by doing
so they will significantly increase their bottom line with each month's
      membership.

This is why I personally stay away from the $1 trial. At the very least, if
they cancel after the first month, I've gotten a full month's income from
      that member.

Ultimately, test it and see if it works for you.

I've done this many times and it ALWAYS increase the bottom line.

Text below quoted from The Gary Halbert Letter

" Let me share with you some words of wisdom which Gary once shared with me regarding “numbers”…

Let's say you spend $1,000 to pay for your advertising. Let's say you are mailing all the letters you can mail for $1,000 or spending $1,000 to run newspaper ads or maybe spending $1,000 on magazine ads. Let's say for every $1,000 you spend, you bring back $2,000. Let's say your refund rate is 10%.

So we have a $2,000 gross... minus $200 in refunds... and minus $1,000 for the costs of advertising. What you have left then is an $800 contribution to overhead. That’s not bad.

Now let's add a 30-day hold into that same equation. (A 30-day hold means that you will not process anyone’s credit card and/or you will not cash anyone’s check until they’ve had a chance to use your product/service for 30 days.) When you do that, here's what will typically happen: You will TRIPLE your response rate. And you will DOUBLE your refund rate. Let's look at the figures again.

We now have a $6,000 gross... minus $1,200 in refunds... and minus $1,000 for the costs of advertising. What you have left then is a $3,800 contribution to overhead. You’ve got to admit…

It Is Better To Have $3,800.00…

Than It Is To Have $800

The math doesn't always work like this. Sometimes adding the 30-day hold will more than triple your gross sales... and not increase your refunds. Sometimes adding the 30-day hold will just double your gross sales... and double your refunds.

Let's see what the numbers look like using the worst of the above cases. Okay, so you double your gross, which now means you take in $4,000 and you double your refund rate (from 10% to 20%) which is $800 in refunds and you still have to subtract the $1,000 for the cost of advertising. That means you've now got $2,200.

    Hey…

$2,200 Is Still Better Than $800

Now let's take an even worse case scenario. Let's say using the 30-day hold increases your sales by 50% but triples your refund rate. In this case, you will have gross sales of $3,000 minus $900 in refunds minus $1,000 for advertising. That leaves you with $1,100.

So, as you can plainly see, using dismal figures like this worst case scenario, you still have $1,100... which... at least to my pea-sized brain... is still better than $800."

    END QUOTE

With memberships sites, if you are scared that they will copy everything and run, drip feed the information to them till they are a full blown member. Then give the full access. Yes, some people will copy all they can and run, let them run. The majority and the kind you want around will stick around as long as your info is good and you keep updating.

What about continually drip feeding your content?

Say your site is 18 months old, and you add material every month. Your first member is getting all your new stuff as you add it.

Your latest member comes on the site 18 months after you've started, and it looks just like it did when the first member joined.

    Does anyone do that?

    I see two benefits:
    1) It looks like your always adding material.

    2) No one can come on and just download everything and cancel their membership.
Maybe you should try something like that, Steven?

    Hi,

i think that if your prospective buyers will not even pay $1 then then are not going to spend $20,$30 or even more.

I have signed up for many sites that were offering $1 but it is normally for 1 month but you have to have extremely good content that is being updated weekly.

I recently signed up for stephen pierces MRMI where he shows you step by step how to make money, many how to videos. That was $1 for 1 month and $39.99 for every month thereafter.

"The money is in the list" is a famous quote which means if you have a good list of customers that have bought products online before then you are half way to making money.

You could have 100,000 email addresses but you can quite easily have 99,000 of those who are just after free content.Thats not who you are aiming to get.

If you dont have a good email list then i suggest you start building one or JV with someone who does.

I have not been on the internet too long and have 8 websites.
I havent made any money yet but it is early days.

Not sure if i am allowed to list my sites here but here goes:
