What price to ask for a domain?

Morning all,

I would really appreciate your thoughts on this one!

I have been approached by a company wishing to purchase one of my domain names. I will be honest, I dont have a clue what kind of price to ask for it.

The domain is a .info and is less than 1 year old.

Your thoughts would be most appreciated

    Post your domain name here.
Without it, no one can give appraisals.

I agree with this, it looks like the best option and then take it from there

Get an offer... I wouldn't expect more than $50. Even $50 would be ridiculous IMO. Is there not something else like that available for them?

You never know though, get an offer you're comfortable with.

Thanks everyone - to be honest if I could get $50 I would dance on my desk!!! The site was one of those you build and then later down the track when you are more experienced, wonder what the hell you were doing!!!

    Thanks again

I would ask them to make an offer too but I wouldn't take the first offer they made as it would probably be their lowest mark.
Tell them to go a little higher and see what they say.
      Hope this helps.

here is a great idea ... If you work out how much it cost you, Say $0.99 (Godaddy) x 2 + New domain name = Min Selling Price.

A bit like buying and selling property -- Trading up for a bigger property with the least cost to pocket

I have about 240 domains and regularly buy/sell/trade them ... As advised by the others on this post .. Get an offer - then decide ...

BTW i talk for personal experience when you mentioned -- " The site was one of those you build and then later down the track when you are more experienced, wonder what the hell you were doing!!!"

I recently found some old backups of sites i made in 2004 - its a bit like your stunning new GFriend getting the "PhotoAlbum Tour" with you in your Mullet that at the time was the "in thing" (although i never had a mullet - just really ugly spectacles) as long as your grow ...

The value of a domain name is in the volume of targetted traffic it attracts. If it has no traffic then, personally, I do not believe that it's worth much. Get them to make you an offer, negotiate it up a bit and sell. Reinvest the proceeds in a "better" domain name.

I don't agree with this at all. Believe it or not, there are people out there that are doing really great stuff online, not just building entry pages for affiliate products.

Sometimes traffic plays no role whatsoever in domain sales. I have seen domains go for $100,000+ just because of a really good name, or a domain that works great for a popular company.

I don't think that I mentioned "building entry pages for affiliate products" in my post and that is not relevant to my argument. I agree that many many people are doing great things online; some of them make money from them.

In your $100,000+ examples of good names, how many of them had no traffic - if they were such good names they would have natural traffic. I still think, however, that a website is worth very little to a purchaser unless: 1) it has targetted traffic; or 2) it has good value content.

Like I said, I imagine this particular "offer" is the domain appraisal scam since it is currently making the rounds again ... but

I have sold many domains with ZERO traffic .... let's see
chlamydiatesting dot com went for $900 to a company that sells medical tests

That's just one example. None of my domains that I sell have traffic. They sell because I campaign them to companies that could benefit from them usually because they're very targeted keywords for the company.

You may have been approached by the oldest domain scam in the book. First they tell you they want to purchase your domain, then you tell them how much. Then they say good deal ... we just need an appraisal. Then they give you the url(s) of the acceptable appraisal sites, which happens to be theirs. They only want you to purchase an appraisal and will not buy your domain.

Make sure you don't fall for that scam. I just got one yesterday and someone else on here got one last week.

I get these on a fairly regular basis, and they're always this same old scam.

This thread has an entertaining example of this:

      http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...rculation.html

I followed up with one of the emails I got, just to see where it went and it was exactly the same guy as in that thread. Same name, same URL for the appraisal, everything.

That's true, I was almost duped once. I did a search and found all these scam complaints. Glad I did my due diligence. The chances of you being approached for a .info are slim, so be careful.

    I also have a few. I've got a PR3 and a PR4 that I'm looking to sell.

Worth more to keep and promote your own sites. Noone is willing to pay fair value right now and there is not a marketplace that you can generate enough traffic to your listings. Flippa is over crowded.

Just listing domains is a very passive way to promote domains. The way I promote domains is to Google the keywords for the domain, then in the results, starting at page 10, rather than page 1, I start emailing the most likely companies that could benefit from the domain.

Here's just a basic email I send, but normally add other selling features to the domain in like how many searches that keyword gets per month, etc.

      Hi,

I am the owner of xxxxxxxx.com, an excellent domain name that is highly relevant to your business. I am going to list it on Sedo.com for sale, but thought I would offer it to a few select companies that might have an interest in this domain. Since your company xxxxxx, this seems like a perfect domain for your company.

I understand that you already have a website and domain name, however this domain would be an excellent additional domain to drive highly targeted traffic to your main site. Several highly experienced domainers have estimated the value of this domain to be $750. That is not a set price and I am now taking offers on this domain before listing it on Sedo. Please contact me if you are interested in this domain.

      Regards

Each email I send out is individual to the company I send it too. This is a very easy way to sell domains and get end user prices rather than low reseller prices by selling it somewhere like namepros.com or other listing sites.

If it's an offer to buy a .info I'd be questioning it's authenticity. Unless of course it's a premium generic .info name. Do some research on the prospective buyer. You can find out alot by doing a few simple searches in Google.

You could just let them make you an offer, but whatever you do, do not get conned into purchasing anything before selling the domains, as the others have mentioned. The minute they start talking about this, you should run the other way. Otherwise, it'd be no harm in just trying to see how much they'd offer for your domain.
