Need help. Just did namecheap and hostgator

I'm following the directions trying to set up my new website on hostgator. The step I am stuck on is "Access Web Disk". I'm so new at this I don't even know what this is, but I'm sure I will need it.

Below is the message header at the top of the hostgator page:

Access Web Disk

Select an Operating System from one of the drop lists to access your Web Disk. You'll need to save the file and then double click on it to run it. Once you run the file, your Web Disk will appear on your desktop.
Note: Ports 2078 (SSL) or 2077 (non-SSL) will need to be allowed on your computer's firewall to use the Web Disk.

The problem I am having is I can't even find my firewall on my PC. I have Windows 7, runneing IE, so I'm sure this should be an easy one for you guys. And yes I've tried it and it won't dl without the ports being unblocked.

Help!

What are you trying to do on the web server? Are you going to install a blog, forum, or upload some simple html page?

To upload the files to the server, get an FTP program - I use filezilla. Then upload your files to the html_public, or the html folder.

It is for a web site designed to sell physical products to customers.

Is it a database driven site? Or is it a site of html files?

Either way - get filezilla and upload the files to the html root directory of the server.

I dont use Hostgator but I honestly would have thought most hosting companies would use pretty much the same things. And I don't have clue what a 'web disk' is either.

What exactly are you trying to do? Have you created a website and are now trying to upload it? Or is this 'web disk' like a site creator?

Honestly I hope someone can answer you because I'm stumped.

You will need to have the nameservers for your domain pointing to your webhost.
Then you need to use cpanel to Add-On the domain.
Once it has been added, get Filezilla and learn to use it to upload your website to the root folder.

Webdisk is a newer development that allows treating a website's file structure as if it were a part of your computer. I assume it was developed as a more 'user friendly' version of FTP, one problem, I've never been able to get it to work. I will say I haven't played with it much though, so I probably am missing something obvious in how to enable it. It is not an essential tool, as hostgator also allows FTP, and http based uploads through the cpanel, I would advise using FTP to access your account for these purposes honestly, filezilla is a really good program for this.

I never recommend Fantastico for several reasons:

1 - Fantastico might not install the latest version. Not having the latest version opens up the doors to security issues.

2 (and the most important) - the user does not learn anything.

By uploading the files, the person gets hands on experience on downloading the latest version, uploading the files and running the install script. Running the install script is very much like running the update script.

When it comes time to update their site due to some kind of security issue, the person should remember doing some of it before.

Too many people use Fantastico to install outdated software, and then wonder why their site was hacked a few months later.

i dont really understand you but i hope i can help.

First you'd need to bind your namecheap domain to your hostgator server.
Search for "change nameserver" or something like that on namecheap and enter the nameserver provided by hostgator.
Your nameserver should look something like this:
    ns1.hostgator. com
    ns2.hostgator. com

If you are uploading a website (u have all files ready html-images-the works):
-Use filezilla. (filezilla-project dot org) Or any other readily available ftp program.
-log in using your web hosting account credentials which is usually ftp.YOURDOMAIN.com and your user id and password.
-Browse thru which folder you want to upload it to. If you don't have that folder yet, (for example YOURDOMAIN.com/photos) simply create a new folder and dump all of the files in there!

If you are looking to install an ecommerce software
i'd recommend choosing an open source software from Fantastico, which is available in your control panel. Usually the link to is is : YOURDOMAIN.com/cpanel

Explore your new web presence and have fun!
