Confessions Of A Newbie!

Even though I've been an internet marketer for some time now, I still think of myself as a newbie. I've been able to learn some valuable lessons over the last few months that I'd like to share.

  1. Stop trying to sell from the get go and start building a business. This one through me for a loop. I thought the whole idea for being on the internet was to make money. It is, but.
  2. Focus on getting traffic to your website or blog. So I was to learn how to get traffic to my website. That made sense because I needed to get traffic to sell anyway.
  3. There are many ways to get traffic and SEO and Google are just one. Now that one through me. I thought everything centered around Google. Then I learned about forums, article marketing, article syndication s, press releases, etc.
  4. Learn to convert traffic into your list. I began to understand how to build a list and how valuable it is.
  5. Spend time building trust with your list by providing value to them. That only makes sense so I get it.
Bottom line: If you provide value, they will come. If you build trust, they will buy.

I'm so glad I finally get it.

    Hi John,

Nice post there. All of us in one way or another starts as newbie.
You know what works for me?

I sell to people what they love to buy. I sell what is hot and sell what sells like pancake.

There are many ways to find it out. One of them is to look at digital stores with ranking.

Go to clickbank and open the marketplace. Rank the products by popularity. The products that is hot is at the top.

Yup, the competition might be stiff but you can be sure that it is something that your customers want.

Yes like someone said, that the money is in the list, I once don't believe this, but later, I found that repeating and satisfied clients are very important for any online business.

The money is in the list and you must build your list with a valuable free product that your niche wants. Important question that should be answered...but then you want to chat through emails like you are sharing information with your best friend.
Next give great information, but incomplete information...they must purchase one of your product creations or affiliate product to answer all of the questions. Just be sure not to sell anything that you personally have not tried. Do not sell junk or you will lose their trust.
I believe this is the number one reason why 90% of the internet marketers do not make money worth chatting about. Too busy being a machine and turning out sites and just plain marketing.
Slow down and focus on one product, be an expert at it, chat with experts in your niche and build relationships....the money will come!

Hi there, I'm a newbie myself and I couldn't agree with you more - this is a good checklist to hang onto, and I think a good reminder when things get frustrating and a little difficult at times

You are right my friend, build trust with your list and they will buy every time. A lot of marketers drop the ball there. Provide the value and build the trust that is a win win...

Newbies don't understand that stuff yet. You are officially no longer a newbie.

Right, you are not a newbie.

Point number 1 is the most important. A perfect example would be let's say Twitter. I know folks who have been able to get 1K to 3K followers on Twitter and immediately start trying to sell before developing a "real" list of leads through social interaction or even just a free offer/squeeze page. That leads to disappointment and dropping out.

        Hi John,

        I love it!!!

What's so great about creating value, is that it helps others while taking the fear away. I'm a complete newbie, been at this for only a couple of months now and asking people to trust you and part with their hard earned cash when they have absolutely no idea who you are seems crazy to me. Both online and offline!

By loading people with value and experience and knowledge etc etc, not only do you feel good as you're helping them, but also you know you're not eventually going to be asking for money for nothing!

I've read so many threads now about people who aren't doing well and don't understand why people won't buy from them.

Value and trust = return on your efforts. You have to put the hard work in first, part with your knowledge. Really help people move closer to their goals and eventually when the time is right they will pay you for it.

Thanks John - all the best!!!!

          Amazing post.

A lot of people take years to understand these principles; that is why they end up getting nothing. Also, these principles look pretty easy to read and understand, but can take a lot of time if someone tries to master them.

          Anyway, loved what you wrote.

          Regards,
          Naimath

I would certainly agree with this "If you provide value, they will come. If you build trust, they will buy." Doing a lot of marketing requires skills and research, you must also keep in mind that you must not always expect fast results. The fastest way to get rich, is to get rich slow

This is so true. I have always believed that in any value you give to your list or audience overall, income will always knock your doors and also, given that you've got the perfect optimization in place, results come in double.

If you don't build your list from the start it is very hard to look back and see what could have been. Permission based email really is the lifeline of any online business unless you have truck loads of cash to spend on advertising.

Couldn't agree more. Starting a list from the get go is crucial. Think about it if a visitor came to your site and left. He is gone for ever unless you have a way to contact them. So ideally everyone who comes (of course the actual percentages are going to be less) to your site, opts into a list will gradually build you a group of interested prospects that you can follow up.

Your "bottom line" is absolutely essential! There are way too many people who fall into the trap of trying to take shortcuts (myself included). It is all about value and trust -- there are no shortcuts to that

You are right on target with your newbies help list, but I believe that the one thing that holds back the most newbies is what I call "protective mass learning". They try to learn everything they can about Network Marketing, including getting traffic, so they pick-up and digest every ebook and video training product they can get a hold of. But they put-off actually doing anything to actually DRIVE traffic to their site. Why? Because learning all this stuff from all the creative gurus out there can be lots of fun -- and there's no risk involved!

On the other hand, actually marketing is scary and risky. What if nobody buys from me? Let's face it, we human beings are not wired to feel comfortable with rejection. So it's much safer to just soak-up knowledge until we're 100% confident of our success...which never happens, of course. So we just keep spinning our wheels, and make no income.

My advice. Learn the basics, and then jump in feet first! Learn while you earn. Yes, you'll get rejected...A LOT! But those 1-5% or more of people who join your list and then buy from you will make all that rejection a lot easier to accept.
