Can someone explain Word Press Direct to me?

Acquiring a domain name and hosting isn't usually free. The Wordpress.org website creation script is free.

Wordpress itself IS free-the software, along with their website creation. With any website though, you have to pay for hosting and that is a seprate thing altogether. Hosting is fairly cheap also but it's something you MUST have if you are going to have a website. Free hosting can cause all sorts of problems for you. DON'T USE IT! Domain names also cost. Again though, in order to have a website you have to have a domain name. But, the Wordpress software itself is free.

You never read the FAQ on sites that you want to use? My advice is to get into the habit...

  Wordpress Direct is horrible. I guess it would be useful for some, but only people who have NO technical knowledge what so ever. All it does is install your blog, install and configure some plugins.
  
  I spent more time scrapping the rubbish plugins they use and properly configuring the rest then the time you would save by installing wordpress from cpanel and uploading all the plugins via FTP.
  
  The fact that Ed Dale promotes them was enough for me to discredit most of what he says.

  I started using WP direct some time ago so I don't know if this still applies but when I first used it (early 2009) there was an option to use one of their domains which is a bit like blogger/squidoo etc and had www.your keywords+ ruqqa and other weird words options.com . This option made the whole process totally free however, I used their domain once but was never indexed by google if I remember rightly. Things may have changed though.
  
  I do have 2 active websites with the free option using my own domain and hosting with wordpress direct and that's working well for me. It's good if you are not well versed in setting up all the plugins for installing your own wordpress.
  
  You can get a cheap basic hosting account with many hosting sites for around $5 -$7 and you could use a cheap .info domain and install your own word press blog with the basic settings to check out your niche.

It was free for me. I signed up during the 30 Day Challenge, and I was never charged.

Why is it such a useful tool then for test blogs?

It isn't a .com; your site is a secondary site under their site, so wouldn't that not rank well?

Also, can you even make money with one? Is it against their term of service to be putting affiliate links that earn you money on a site that they control?

Even a technical idiot could figure out to install wordpress from fantastico cpanel.

And even without fantastico/cpanel...wordpress installation per FTP is also not exactly rocket science...

Wordpress has come such a long way..seriously..nothing difficult about it.

Geez GeorgR & Jimmy I'm sooooooo glad you weren't my mentors when I was first getting started. Yeah---guess what---some newbies are totally clueless idiots about this stuff! It was harder for me than the year I had to learn Spanish by immersion in the Yucatan.

Jimmy you are so blessed to have a brain that understands what you said below:

... or maybe you had to learn like many of us.

I found WPDirect from Ed Dale and have to say it has been great. Yes I will graduate to the much higher level you guys live on in the near future. But for now it got me started. . . which btw is the hardest thing for the majority of IM newbies (which are in the 1000's daily). Ed Dale is all about getting people in motion----not smacking them down.
