Continuity. 30-days Or 7-day Trial?

Hey guys.

I just put together my first membership site and I'm torn between doing a 7-day trial for $1.00 or a 30-day trial for $1.00.

Do you guys think one is more effective then the other?

Thanks

    Define "effective."

Your COS is going to be much higher on 30 days as you're paying for more product and shipping a larger unit.

Your pre-bill cancels and chargebacks may also be higher as the product is no longer top of mind.

Response might be higher as well, since the offer could be e of higher perceived value.

If the product really really works, it may also give you more time to prove out results and create loyalty.

How fast are they going to get access and be able to use the site? 7 days doesn't seem like much. I'd think you'd have more people canceling after 7 days because its still fresh on their mind...but I've never tested it and more specifically tested within your market. That being said, on a personal note, if I'm ever going to ask for a return on anything, I always do it within the first few days anyhow cause if you know you know, usually.

Do you have a way to split test it and see? Might be your best bet.

I would go for the 30 day trial. Then your buyers have the time to try things out and see if it's something for them. If your plan is to give new fresh content every month and they like what they get, it's a good chance they will stay.

Run a split-test and let your target market give you the
right answer on which trial period is the most effective.

The opinions of people outwith your target market don't
    really count that much.

My vote goes to a 14 day trial....better option than 7 (rush) and 30 (ages away) days.

I did a 60 day trial once and it was a #@!$@# disaster because after 60 days MANY people forgot that they signed up and ran to complain/dispute when they saw an "unknown" charge on their bill

I then changed it to 7 days and really did not see any noticeable difference in conversions. So there is your answer (at least in my experience)

I have worked on many membership sites and anything between 14 - 30 days is normally ok, another thing to consider is that you could always if you wanted send a reminder to the subscriber. I have a couple of customers who do this and they have had not one complaint about this todate. Good luck with your project. Kieron

I agree with joe tho 14 days sounds good and maybe up the price to a few bucks
