If you got an email from someone considering starting an online business, what would be the most important thing that they should know before they take the plunge?

Just like real life, get a plan.

Without a plan they will lose focus and money.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

    Hi Mom

I would tell them that it's rewarding, but it takes a lot of work. Then send them here to the Warrior Forum.

    All the best,

I would ask them why they want to start an online business. Some people think that a blog is a great escape from their 9-5 only to realize that the first few months can be a LOT harder. Being your own boss is no piece of cake, especially if you do not have a plan and the knowledge and dedication necessary to pull it off.

That depends on what they are asking. If they know what kind of business they want to start - for example perhaps an online branch of their existing business - then you can start advising them on how to optimise their site so that it is found.

If they are asking the same question that gets asked here many times a week - in effect "tell me how to make money on the internet" - you have a harder time.

As I've said before, asking "how do I make money online" is akin to walking into a cafe and asking random people "what job should I apply for". How on earth would they know - they don't know what you can do, what your experience is, what you like, what you dislike, what ..........

There's this fallacy that you can "make money online" in some magical way without any skills, knowledge or abilities - an idea that wouldn't occur to most people who want an offline job. They don't say "I want to make money offline - tell me where to start". They say - "I need to earn money - I need a job - what can I do?" Be that brain surgeon, rocket scientist or factory worker.

      /rant

Having said that - you could go round and show them some different business models - article writing for others, copy writing, affiliate marketing, bum marketing, making websites for others, product creation, reselling, ebay selling, amazon selling, etc, etc.

If their eyes glaze over, then move on. If they really sound interested and are willing to work and make decisions for themselves, you could be on to something. Those who expect someone else to tell them what to do will fail - on or off line.

I would tell them the following:

    1 - It's great business but it's not easy.
    2 - It's take time
3 - Need to learn and take actions
4 - Recommend them on good course that I did that relevant to their business.

    • I'll tell them to read, read and read....act on what they learn from reading, take to heart what successful IMERS suggests and view lapses as a challenge. Cheers

That "online" is just an adjective, and they are still starting a business. The up-front investment might be lower, but it's still just like any other small business... it has all the same risks, responsibilities, licensing requirements, and legal encumbrances that every small business has.

You'd be surprised how many people have just never realised that.

I would stress the importance of finding a niche, knowing that your first (whatever -- blog, site, product, promotion) doesn't have to be perfect right from the start, and that online business takes a great deal of self discipline. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot sit in your pajamas and cash checks by pressing a few buttons on your computer.

I would tell them when you make $1,000 a day don't get comfortable. In fact that is when you need to work harder, act as if you are broke, starving, and have a huge pile of bills to pay. ALWAYS work harder, and smarter.

I would tell them it is not about the product they are selling it is about building relationships. People do not buy products, they buy people. Brand yourself as a leader and others will trust and follow you into your opportunity.

I would warn them about the so called "get rich quick" products. There is nothing out there that you can do to get rich overnight. Just like the real world, you have to work in order to succeed. I would also warn them about the people that claim they have the "secret" to making money online. There is no "secret" to making money. Your results depend entirely on the effort that you put into your business.

5 Questions To Consider, Before Starting Your Home Based Business

For many people, having a home business would be something really attractive. To be your own boss, to not having to commute, to choose the working hours freely and to be able to plan the work-day entirely on your own.

If you are considering starting your own home based business, then you could start with thinking it through, by asking yourself some initial questions, such as:

    1. If I'm going to keep my current job, at least as a starter, when will I find the time to build my home based business? How many hours each day can I put aside and use to my business endeavours? Can I work early in the morning or at the late evenings? Maybe at the weekends?

    2. Do I have a suitable room or place for my home business? Can I work uninterrupted? And, would my neighbours also feel uninterrupted?

    3. How much energy and determination am I willing to put into learning something new, if required? Even if the basic direction of my home based business is something that I already know of and master, then: How about the management of the home business itself? Should I delegate some or any chores, like the book-keeping?

    4. Do I know how to market my home based business, in order to get people aware of that they can buy something from me? Should I use online- or offline marketing, or both maybe? How much money and or time do I need to put aside for marketing efforts alone? What is the most effective way for me to market my home business, within my particular economical frames? If I plan to do this myself, could I learn something that would make it easier and more effective?

    5. And, last but not least, how about the money? How do I plan to finance the start? How much money is needed? Do I have most of the equipment already or do I have to buy or rent something? If I do need to buy equipment, then what does it cost?

This is a few questions to start with, that's very good to have the answers to, before starting up your own home based business. It would make your upstart smoother and safer, to have some answers for yourself, about the home business of yours to be.

There are a lot of things that needs to be considered if one is thinking of taking the plunge into the world online business.

Of course there's the question of whether the person is planning to do this full time (in place of his current job) or simply as a part-time thing (meaning he keeps his current job and see the online business as an extra).

Once that's al squared away they have to know that the operative word here is business. It may be online but it is still a business.

And like any business it's not going to be easy. Yes the potential is there (like there is potential in any business endeavor) but it's just that some have more potential than others.

It comes down to the market they are going to be entering in. Market research is important here as it is in the brick and mortar business world.

Then they would need to have a business plan/model to follow. Going into this blind is like a bomb disposal expert wearing nothing but his underwear and having only a pair of nail clippers.

Will he succeed in disarming the bomb? Maybe. But how much do you want to bet he gets blown up? A lot of us will probably say he won't make it.

(Ok maybe wrong analogy, sue me I'm not good at analogies. :p)

And then there is his mental focus to work hard to make things work. They can't just do things haphazardly because the result will be a fail.

They need to follow through with what ever plan/model they have created. At the same time they have to have the patience and perseverance of job because making money online is not instantaneous.

There is no golden "easy" button in online business.

And if they haven't been scared off by all this then wish them good luck.
