Articles - What is the point?

I have an articles site. Yes, I bought it when I was new and didn't know so much and don't ask me why I keep it going except it's kind of like slowing down and watching an accident on the freeway.

I take my laptop with me and review articles when I'm doing something otherwise mindless and I see so much crap, I have to wonder...

1. What is the point of submitting these awful articles? And is there something I missed about the article being a topic that's at least somewhat related to the anchor text and links?

2. Are there really sites that publish them and if yes, then how credible is that site? Or is it just a place to get any kind of dreck published and nobody cares, including the site owner?

Here's how it goes...

If the article title has grammar or spelling errors = instant rejection.

If the first 2 sentences of the article are incomprehensible = instant rejection.

If the article isn't in English or doesn't link to an English-language site = instant rejection.

If an author is particularly awful or persistently submits articles that don't meet the guidelines, I'll go spot check other articles by the same author. If they're all similar, all that author's articles are just deleted from the database. This is a fast and easy way of clearing jobs from the queue, let me tell you. And since these dreck submissions come in bunches, I can clear out the backlog of articles waiting approval in no time. I then ban them from the system. I have also banned the entire IP range of Russia, since the worst offenders seem to originate from there.

If the links don't comply with the guidelines = instant rejection.

Even authors who are almost always good writers and compliant with the guidelines submit articles about 20% of the time that don't meet the guidelines, so I can't even go in and block approve an author.

Then there are the authors who write and ask how long it takes to get articles approved. Invariably, these are authors with multiple guideline violations.

All I can figure is owners of smaller article sites just mass approve this crap; which, IMO, makes the endeavor pretty worthless. One of these days I'll get tired of watching the train wreck and find something else to do with the domain name.

My take is, the sites that happily publish the trashy articles are probably just plastered in ads, and run by someone who was told there is big money in these ad farm type "article" sites.

From the point of view of the people that post the trash, many are probably just out for links. They put out thousands of these articles in the hope of rankings for their site.

They have not yet learned that first of all many of the smaller directories will probably dissolve (as you are thinking of doing) when they stop making money (if they make any at all), they also have not yet figured out that by putting out informative, error free, well structured articles they will probably get more visitors, and more links to their sites/blogs as people decide to republish their work.

      Quality over quantity!

      Just my thoughts.

I think people start off with good intentions but get overwhelmed with the workload from approvals, give in and eventually the site disappears.....

The problem as I see it is that people think more about quantity than quality.. they think I just need to crank out article after article & post them to all the article sites & this will make me money. The other issue is many blog owners just pick up any content & stick it in their blogs just so for the sake of so called regular updates..

You must have a high level of tolerance txconx! I couldn't do what you do..

Electronic graffiti . If you had no rules or screening the site would be a mess. That's why EzineArticles has so many darn rules. They also hire a bunch of reviewers.

I've seen WSO's advocating just throwing together articles and plastering them on any site that will take them. The articles don't have to make sense, just have lots of key words. People get the idea they don't have to work for those links and traffic and they will take the easy way and put out crap.

One of the problems I see is people putting out article with no good content strictly trying to promote a product or service for thier own benifit

    I have no idea what your writers are being paid but it sounds like they are generally inexperienced and/or uneducated. Just seeking some way, any way, to make a few bucks, but lack the skills. But I guess that's obvious. :-{

Just report the "mydollar" posts, they'll go away.

As for the OP, I really think the people who are submitting garbage like that have just one goal in mind: building massive backlinks via article directories. They don't care if the articles make sense or are related to the sites in their bio, they just try to throw a whole big wad of crap at the wall and hopefully some will stick and bring traffic to their site.

I used to use the Unique Article Wizard on a few of my blogs, but found that the majority of articles that were being submitted were just like you've described. I had to stop using the plugin and go find good articles manually because it was taking too much time to delete all the crap.

I feel for you - but the good news is that if you keep high standards for your directory and build up some decent traffic to it, you can eventually earn decent money from it and sell it if you choose to. I believe that quality pays off in the long run, it just may take some time to prove that to yourself.

I really wish more article databases used your rules for rejection! There would be far less crap out there for the rest of us to sort through!

It really hurts my business as a writer when my clients can point to articles like the ones you reject and say "why do you charge so much? I don't need quality, I just need stuff like this!" ...though, I don't usually take on those clients anyway, so nevermind.

Still though: imagine if all of the article databases actually required work to go into the articles they approved.... *sigh* what a wonderful internetty world that would be!
