I have a simple question that I simply cannot figure out!! A month ago I bought XSite Pro2 because I just was spinning my wheels trying to set up websites with Wordpress. I am trying to get a site up XSite and it needs to know my FTP server and FTP Directory.

I have Host Gator for my hosting service. I did a chat last night for help and they did seem to understand what I was asking. This is a simple question, right??

Where would I find FTP server and FTP Directory??

Thanks so much!! (Can you tell I'm a noob??? )

You can setup your ftp account on your server control panel. It might already be setup for you using your server login information and site domain.

Most people upload files to their server using an ftp program. You can use a free ftp program like filezilla. Your ftp would be something like. ftp.sitename.com. You use this address along with your using name and password to access your server using the software. From their you can transfer your html/images, etc to your sites directory on the server.

Your host should be able to help you with this.

the address is easy to figure out:

ftp.yourdomainname.com (or whatever you have .net, .org, .info, etc.)

by connecting to your FTP at the address above you'll see you have this directory:

      public_html

then inside the directory are your website files

      Hope it helps.

    Hi Robyna,

When you purchase a hosting account you will usually have 2 user IDs and 2 Passwords.

Generally the first set of ID & Password is your customer ID and password to enter your hosting company. The second set it an ID and Password to open the folder on their server where they house your website.

A software that is used to upload your webpages to the place on Hostgater's server is called an FTP client software because you are a client of the host. Filezilla is a very good free one as Tom mentioned. Another good (inexpensive) one is CuteFTP. You don't need all the whistles and bells from their expensive versions, the cheapest one will do. Although with Filezilla there really is no reason to buy another.

At Hostgater there will be a folder that represents your website space, and you will need your FTP Password and ID to open it.

When you set up a new account in Filezilla (or other FTPclient software) you hit "new" and put in the info it requests - including your FTP ID and Password.

Once you are into your hosting account's folder on the host's website, there will be a folder into which you will upload your webpages. It is usually called "PublicFTP," although some hosting companies give it a different name. For example one of the hosting companies I use calls that file "HTdocs."

The FTP client software you use will have a couple windows in it. The one on the left-hand side lets you browse your computer to find where you put the webpages you designed. The window on the right-hand side is your folder on your hosting company's computer.

On the left you highlight the files you wish to upload, then click the arrow (in the middle of the page) that points to the right (your hosting folder). Filezilla, or CuteFTP, or what ever you use will "beam" your files up to your website location.

Xsite PRo probably has an FTP client software built in.

    Hope this helps.

you don't really need to use the ftp server.

Just enter your url "mydomain.com" without the http or www and your password and it will upload your site.
