What Do You Use for Project Management for Your Contractors?

What do you use for project management for your contractors?
Email?
Basecamp?
Some other PM program?
Personally I am using email, but it is getting way out of control.
I have used Collabtive - Open Source collaboration in the past, it works good but sometimes feels to complex.
I want to try 37Signals Basecamp but the price turns me off and the basic set doesn't have enough features/projects for me.
So what do you use? I think this could be a great topic of discussion and insightful for others.
