College Student Needs Interviewee!

Hello everyone! I hope I am not disrupting your forum by asking for help.

I am a senior in Communication and Media Studies in Boston, MA, USA seeking out someone to interview. Specifically, someone who has been a Marketing Manager for 2+ years.

Can anyone please help? And alternatively, has anyone ever interviewed about their profession before?

    Clarissa,

Im sure you will find a few people here that are willing enough to help and that will prove to be quite insightful.

However, might I also suggest that you have a look at RTIR Online - Where producers go to find guests.

There are quite a few professionals available there that are willing to do interviews and webinars on all kinds of topics.

    Hope that helps

Thank you so much Drew! I truly appreciate it. I'm shocked that despite my large network, a Marketing Manager doesn't exist. I've sought out this forum after reading about how great it was on another website.

I'll certainly check out RTIR, but anyone from here is preferred! Thanks again.

It may help if you actually specify what type of marketing questions will be asked, possibly a few mock ones to give people the idea of what they might be in for.

These are the types of questions I'd be asking:

    1. How did you prepare for your profession? Describe your work experience, education and background.
    2. Describe a “typical” day at work (activities, contacts, hours, etc.).
    3. What are the major marketing-related challenges that you face in your role? Describe one specific critical marketing-related challenge that you recently faced and how you handled it.
    4. What specific skills are needed to be successful in your line of work? Why? How do they help you get your job done?
    5. What professional associations (i.e. AMA, etc.), continuing education and/or other activities do you engage in to keep your marketing skills/knowledge current? Why did you pick these specific associations and/or activities? (Should add Warrior Forum to this Q! )
    6. What would you like to learn more about that would help you to continue to improve in your job as a marketing manager? Why?
    7. What do you like best about your work in marketing? Like the least? Why?
    8. What recommendations do you have for someone considering a career in marketing management?

    Hey Clarissa,

You will certainly find some people who have interesting answers to those questions in this forum. Internet Marketing is an interesting industry...most IM's I know, if not all, do not rely on their education for what they know or attribute their success to anything other than experience.

You say you are looking to interview a marketing manager? What do you mean by that? Do you just mean somebody who manages their own marketing campaigns?

This is how it's defined in the assignment:

"A Marketing Manager, for the purpose of this assignment, is defined as someone employed full-time in a Marketing position (Director, Manager, Associate, etc. - title is irrelevant as long as the person is responsible for the Marketing function as their primary job). Although a small business owner most likely handles all of the aspects of Marketing for their own company, this focus of this course is not on entrepreneurship so it is not acceptable to interview someone that is a small business owner for this assignment unless you obtain permission from the instructor FIRST!!"

Most if not all people here are "small business owners"... Have you gained permission?

Clarissa going by what you are telling me I want to give you a few pointers:

1-As others have told you and you might find out, most IMers have become successful without a Marketing Degree. And most are from different backgrounds. They have simply become successful at the trade by reading, learning and implementing.
2- I am assuming you are a student at either Emerson College or Boston University, both of which have very demanding communication programs. If this is the case I recommend that you try to contact your local newspapers, TV stations, radio stations and so on. Ask who their Marketing Director or Manager is and I can almost guarantee you will get a call back from someone. Especially considering that Boston has the biggest number of College students within a 20 mile radius than any other city in the country. So, believe it or not, a lot of companies not only offer internships but are also willing to help students with projects. (I lived in Boston for a few years during my career and where we worked we ALWAYS welcomed college students.)
3- Here is a list of some of the places where you might be able to find a Marketing Director willing to answer your questions.
NBC Channel 7 - Located in Downtown close to city hall
ABC Channel 5 - Located in Needham
Fox Channel 25 - In Dedham on RT 1 close to Dedham Mall
Univision Channel 27 - In Needham
NECN (New England Cable News) - Needham
Coca Cola Corp. - Needham Corporate Park
Telemundo - Charlestown inside Schrafts Plaza
      The Boston Globe - Dorchester

Again, these are just some of the places I had information on while I worked in Boston about ten years ago. I do not think it has changed much, so call them up. I am sure they are all listed. In the smaller companies you will have better luck at being connected directly to the Marketing Mngr. or Director. Good Luck and I hope this helps. I know how picky those communication schools can be!

hmmm, well most IM's consider themselves entrepreneurs because they are self-employed, often make themselves into LLC's or S-corps. You might want to try interviewing an affiliate manager of an affiliate network. That might be more in line with your assignment.

Affiliate Managers are the people who affiliate marketers communicate with to receive offers to run from an affiliate network. Might sound confusing but it is really quite simple. Affiliate marketer wants to run a campaign for a certain advertiser from a certain network. The affiliate manager gives the affiliate marketer the advertises affiliate link. That way, any traffic that goes through that link is attributed to that affiliated marketer.

So, the affiliate manager is sort of a middle man between the affiliate marketer and the affiliate network. I think they should be considered as being employed full time in a marketing position, but I don't know. I still think interviewing a full time internet marketer would give you more interesting results.

So, numba8 and butters...does this mean you would be interested?! I wouldn't mind obtaining permission at all. If you are interested, send me a brief description of what you do.

numb8 - Personally, I'm interested in someone who has learned how to market THEIR campaign and does so professionally - not someone who simply is the middle man. I would run it by the professor and I'm sure she'd say yes.

I really appreciate the feedback from everyone. Though I am a Communication and Media Studies major, I go to a very small private college on Beacon Street called Fisher College. It is demanding, but it allows for a more broad mindset of career choice. Personally, I'm interested in Technical Communication and writing. Marketing is very interesting to me, but I'm not sure how I'd fare at it...

If anything, though, Internet Marketing is right up my alley. I'm a total internet geek, not meaning I surf Facebook. I'm well versed in HTML and Visual Basic, and I love networking and strategizing. Right now, a friend of mine is attempting to popularize his music blog and I'm helping him reach audiences.

The summer course I'm taking is Principles of Marketing, and so the professor is solely Marketing. I'll definitely attempt to contact some of the companies you listed, jennypitts, and thank you.

Also, HorseStall, since I don't have over 50 posts I cannot send PMs, but if you care to give a description of what you do, I'd love to hear it!
