Blogger - Its the best in my opinion and since Google owns it, your blog will get a higher priority

Squidoo - Ranks well but you don't have full control over your lens

Hubpages - The same as squidoo but IMO, it doesn't rank as good as squidoo

WordPress - Google loves WordPress. If you are talking about the self hosted version, then it is the best of all the other choices. If you are talking about the .COM version, you will not be able to monetize your blog to the full potential since WordPress.Com has some terms and conditions regarding that

Propeller - Never knew propeller had a blog. I know it as a social voting website

I am not sure whether having a free blogger or wordpress blog matters. What should matter for rankings is how well your blog is optimized for search engines and how the quality of content is.

          Here's my take...

I think that it's a waste of time using anything else but a Wordpress self-hosted blog.

All of this Squidoo and Hubpages stuff in my opinion is only good for weak backlinks. Maybe I would feel differently if the traffic from within these communities was more responsive.

Can you rank using online communities like these? Of course you can.

But, you would also rank just as high if not better if you posted that same content on your blog. And, it's easier to build a relationship with your audience this way too.

We all know how important content is. That's all Google really cares about.

Google does not give Blogger priority because they own it. That's just another false assumption that Internet marketers perpetuate when they want to convince everyone that Google is apart of some conspiracy against them.

Google is a business, they care about user experience. If you feed their search engines great content, they will reward you with better rankings.

It does not matter what platform that you use. They just don't care. If they did, there would only be Blogger blogs ranking on every first page for every keyword.

Now I'm not saying that you shouldn't use Blogger, Squidoo, Hubpages or anything else like them. That's up to you.

However, I do think that it's a waste of time and not worth the effort. And, you can put your content to much better use.

Get a self-hosted Wordpress blog. If you are marketing to different niches. Get multiple self-hosted blogs.

          Then...

Focus on the only 3 forms of free advertising that matter:

          1. SEO
          2. Article Marketing
          3. Video Marketing
That's where the bulk of your free traffic will come from.

          Then...

If/when you can afford it, start investing in paid advertising.

As I digress...Just get a Wordpress self-hosted blog, for crying out loud.

          Marc

p.s. you are about to get many different points of view now, because there will be many people that disagree with my opinion of Squidoo, Hubpages, etc...

In my opinion you should use:

Blogger if you don't plan to host your blog.
Wordpress is you're planning to pay for hosting.

Good luck and make the right choice

I've got a blogger blog and I've got a wordpress blog(self hosted) and I think that with Wordpress you've got more flexibility and opportunities: more plugins, better looking, professional themes and in overall I think that with wordpress you've got more control over your blog.

    Thats what I think

just look at the amount of settings you can fine tune on your WP blog. and then go to the WP plugin database, and you will find a thousand reasons to use wordpress -- literally !

i recently created two blogs on free hosts. one at blogger, and one at blat.co.za (WP). the blogger blog took a few days to get indexed. i listed it with technorati, feedburner, and blogcatalog.

the wp blog at blat (listed at a local service similar to technorati, a local rss aggregator, and a local social bookmarking site), was indexed in three hours.

      makes you think........

I think Blogger Blog is the best Free one to get Ranking the quickest for Keywords. I mean gosh Google owns it and has made it very efficient in getting it optimized in the Search Engines !!

Its a no brainer, IMHO !!

  • If you're talking about the free ones, Wordpress.com can rank highly and fast. Plus, your Wordpress tags also rank well, aside from the blog post itself. Blogger.com can outrank Wordpress.com for the blog post itself, but those tag links can take up several spaces in the SERP's if they're closely related.

Be careful if you use them, though. Too commercial, too "spammy" and they'll cut you off!

Okay, here's what you need to know about blogs, especially Wordpress.

Blogger - Loved by Google because they own it. So if you're going to go the
free blog route, go with them over anything else. Just make sure you put
        some decent content on it.

Wordpress - This is where people get screwed. Read their TOS folks. You can
NOT put affiliate links on these blogs. If you do, they can close down your
account. It happened to one of the members here. If you go with Wordpress,
which has way more functionality, put it on your own server. Then you can
        do whatever you want.

Squidoo - A step up from Blogger in that it has more bells and whistles but
it doesn't have as much love from Google. I use it when I want to put up
a lot of complex stuff quickly. The modules are really powerful.

I don't use anything else so I can't comment on Hubpages or any of the
        other stuff that's out there.

Just be very careful with free Wordpress.

Here's the route I would go:
Set up your own site using wordpress, joomla, or whatever (as long as it has an rss feed). Post your content to your own site first, and submit your rss feed to the various rss sites and ping places like pingoat. Then I'd set up all the freebie stuff like squidoo, etc, and point everything back to your site. I'd also throw in some social bookmarking - again, for your own site. Google doesn't care if it sees your content syndicated all over the internet as long as it all points back to the source - your site.

    Tom-
I don't have my personal list on this pc, but here's what I did. I googled 'rss aggregator sites', 'rrs submission' and similar terms. I found several lists of sites, and compiled them all together.

A good way to find some of these sites is to look at the sales pages for software that auto-submit's to these sites

After I had my list, I went to each site and checked it's pageRank. If it was zero or non-existant, I crossed it off my list.

I've heard feedage.com is good for RSS.

As for the blogs, I would definately recommend using self-hosted wordpress.
As a number 2, I'd say squidoo ( I haven't used much blogger, but I've seen them rank high)
For squidoo, I managed to get second place for a keyword with 760,000 competing websites. - Even a keyword without hyphens.

If you do well on squidoo, you can get loads of traffic for being on the top 100 list.
I think what I did, was adding an rss feed, and some ever-changing modules ( like delicious bookmarks etc.), as well as updating it often ( every second day or so)

And you don't really need to do that much when you update. Just add a few sentences, and a module sometimes.

Your lensrank will also increase when people: - Email it, - Rate it, - Comment on it, - Link to it, - As well as many other things.
Make sure you digg it as well, and submit the RSS feed to some places.

If you choose to get self-hosted wordpress, you should try to make a squidoo lens, and link it back to your blog.

My vote goes to WordPress. I started my IM business with a free WP blog, within two weeks I was on page two and within just another week or so I was page 1. I am now #1 Google for my niche. I can post a message and it will be on page 1 of Google within 15 minutes! That has more to do with the number of posts I have, the traffic and the backlinks. But it's great.

Also, I've sold more than $25,000 of eBooks (priced at under $10 each) from this free blog. It's so good that I won't change it to the paid very now!

I hope the best for you!

      SusanUSA,

You're lucky to get away with this on a free wordpress.com blog as this could well be outside their TOS. Please be very vigilant and keep copies of all your posts because you may find your blog closed down without notice :-( I wish you the best of luck!

I would definitely go for a self-hosted wordpress.org blog because it is so flexible. I've been able to rank on the first page for some good, high-traffic keywords within about a week or so. While you're trying to get ranked, post every day, post plenty of content and Google will love you for it.

Without question, Wordpress self hosted. I used to have a free blogger blog, but it just wasn't professional looking in my opinion. With all the plug ins for worpress, you can't fail to have a blog that people will fall in love with and keep returning (subject to your content of course!)

I would say Wordpress hosted yourself!

A slight learning curve but just think all the content you put on it is yours and no-one elses.

You will own it and can build up an authority in your niche and then sell it if you wish.

Also works VERY well with Google listings!

      All the best

My vote is for WordPress self-hosted site too. It's a matter of perception. In my opinion you gain much more credibility when you pay for your own domain and hosting. Oh and 1st page results in Google for various keywords is not hard to achieve if you have great content and post regularly.

        Hi Folks

        Wordpress self hosted any day.

I did a four day experiment using similar articles/posts. I set up a unique blogger for it and set up a wp page on a new domain.

It was for a reasonable long tail keyword phrase with good search and low competition. Within 18 hours the wordpress post had been indexed (Page 2 number 2) - The blogger entry is nowhere to be seen - and three weeks have elapsed since then!!
