Registering your business name?

Hey all,

I'm new around here so go easy on me

Just registering a few accounts here and there (CB, etc..) and when asked for the payee name, I'm just wondering if I should put my personal name, or my "company" name (company being me having bought a domain)?

Are there any advantages to register your business name? Government benefits? (I'm in Quebec, Canada btw).

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jeff

Unless you have a bank account tied to your company name, I would suggest you use your own name for now.

I have a company name--registered in Ontario--and a business bank account tied to that name, so that is what I use. As far as benefits, there really aren't any to start off with IMO. As you begin earning, that may change. In Ontario we have Sole Proprietor companies, and it's all one and them same as far as your personal income tax goes, but that may be different there in QC.

Don't confuse a domain name with a company name. Two different animals.

    And welcome to the forum!

I agree with Elle, registering a domains doesn't mean you can receive payments with that name, you will need a bank account tied to your company name.

Yes in you can use paypal account for payment if you don't want to reveal your name, simply create a paypal account with the name <yourbusiness>@<emailprovider> and link your personal bank account/credit card to the paypal account.

        Hi,
For Click Bank I used my personal name - Its the easiest way to go about it. Even if the check is not in your name and under a businesses name, I know of no tax benefits or advantages to getting the check in your name.

I would keep it simple and have the check addressed to you. That gives you more flexibility. You could deposit the check into your own personal account or into your business bank account.

        that's my 2 cents.

That's the name they print on the check.

If you can't cash checks made out to your domain name, don't put it there.
