So why are so few people actually "failing" with Social Media?

The sad truth about Social Media is that everyone swears by it, but relatively few companies and individual marketers really understand how to make it work for them. Why is that? Why is everyone jumping on board the Social Media bandwagon, but so few are actually turning that interaction into real dollars?

The simple answer is that most people don't take the time to consider their approach to it. This is what we call the "Social Media Mindset." See, when most marketers jump online and start experimenting with Social Media, they're used to thinking in terms of concrete goals. They think in terms of conversion rates or units sold each month. STOP. Don't do that.

I'm going to show you why the traditional marketing and sales mindset just doesn't work for social media. The power of social media is simply that it truly gives us the power to be our own media platform. We can broadcast ourselves. We can turn our brand into a thriving online networks of interaction. At no cost at all we can create a new channel of communication with our customers that rivals the power of newspapers, radio stations and TV networks. It truly is an amazing phenomenon.

But it's not just "media," it's Social Media. The "social" aspect is what makes this so different. See, social media users aren't like TV viewers and they're not like magazine readers. They approach social media differently, so if you don't tailor your message to the medium, you're committing a cardinal sin of marketing.

So what exactly is the Social Media Mindset?

The Social Media Mindset is your entire approach to how you interact with your customers. It's not that you have to be careful or tiptoe around them (or worst of all, be boring), but there's one cardinal rule that you can never violate:

*** Never use Social Media to directly sell a product or service. ***

Now, I'm not saying that you should only use social media for vague, feel good reasons. Heck no! You absolutely SHOULD be using social media to grow your business. But the key point to remember from our cardinal rule is the word "directly." The fundamental idea for you to remember is that your social media message should never be "BUY THIS PRODUCT NOW." It should be "Here's a good way to learn more about what I do" or "Here's some information I picked up that can help you."

See, social media sites are amazingly complex ecosystems of information. (Anyone who's ever had an awkward interaction with a girlfriend/boyfriend on Facebook can testify to that!) After all, not only are you broadcasting your brand to your customers, but you're broadcasting your brand to the wider public. And your customers are talking back to you. And all the while customers can even bypass you entirely and communicate with each other if they want to.

But all that complexity also means that social media users are incredibly sensitive to blatant sales pitches. Remember it's SOCIAL media, so there's a closeness and level of trust that simply isn't there when you're just running commercials on late night cable TV. The trust between you and your customers is your number one asset, and anything that damages that is going to pull you further away from meeting your goals.

The quickest way to destroy that level of trust? Come off as fake, slick, professional and calculating. It's really that simple, and that's exactly why I'm talking about this as a "mindset." Look, if you approach your Twitter followers and Facebook friends as if they were sheep, they're going to pickup on that right away. Social media is a nuanced medium, so you have to bring a nuanced message to them.
