He wants to be my number 1 affiliate by doing this. Could I trust him?

Hi Warriors,

I got an email from a marketer who says he wants to be my number 1 affiliate. But he wants me to do something which I'm not sure is safe, so I was wondering if you could give some advice.

Here's part of his email:

"We will create the campaign on our system, load the creatives and send you a 3-line javascript tracking link pixel to install on your page...

We will host a mirror copy of your website on our own server and test the offer within 21 days. If initial tests look good, we're looking at a full scale roll-out..."

I admit to be a non-techie, so what I'm not sure of is the javascript tracking link to put on my page. Is that safe? But I also don't want to waste any opportunity for someone to explode our sales.

Thanks for the advice,
Michael

He wants to track his sales conversions and asking you to put tracking code on your thank you page more than likely.

    Hi Michael,

I would definitely find out complete details. He could even be planning to hijack all of your sales to his own payment system. A number 1 affiliate does not need to set up a mirror of your website on their servers! Sorry if this is not true of him, but it sounds like a crook to me. Better safe than sorry.

Just do your homework, tell this "super affiliate" to prove what they can provide.

Do plenty of searches on this person.

Or to save time- just walk away.

      Best!

      Kathryn:

It's a common superaffiliate trick, made popular by books like 'Sal the Site Stealer'.

What they do is they test and tweak the thing so it cranks out a max conversion rate. The downside is they also take out your list building code and put their own in with their own followup.

It's a small price to pay to get one of these guys into your fold. As Mike F said recentlly, it's the paid customers list you really want.

He wants to put JavaScript on your thankyou page in order to track his sales. I think it is pretty safe

You are a lucky man, I must say. Super affiliates are knocking at your door!

EDIT: I don't get the second point however:

"We will host a mirror copy of your website on our own server"

    Why is that necessary?

LOL... Tell him it is an affiliate duty to take care of his end..

I understand his need for tracking but it really doesn't need to be like this, he can do it all himself...

Be honest with him and tell him you aren't a techy and if he could explain this in a little more detail. Then you can always post a follow up here if you need more advice.

Tell him to create good landing pages(to boost list), add more bonuses if someone buys from him and build several review sites instead of mirroring your site.

After that when creating a link, put some code to a PHP page to track it and redirect it to your site.

Now if he'd only asked to add tracking code that would seem fine, but if he wants tracking code on your site and is then just mirroring it anyway the tracking code on your site seems pointless...

    I would ask for clarification.

    Hi Karthryn,

"A number 1 affiliate does not need to set up a mirror of your website on their servers!"

The big hitters in the industry (affiliate industry) do it all the time using various techniques including iFrames.

Why? Many reasons (I wont mention some of them here) but one simple reasons is:

The sales letter was written by a guy who knows his stuff and is converting like crazy. Mirror it and turn on the traffic. Can't really go too far wrong.

    Michael,

Just ask a programmer what the script does. If they want it on your thank you page, they are probably just tracking. Just check that its not some sort of cookie stuffer that replaces all cookies with teirs, you'll have some agree affiliates on your hands :-)

    Regards,

    AffiliatePPC

I get similar requests from affiliates, but just to post their tracking scripts, nothing about creating mirror sites.

Just wondering... could posting several affiliates' tracking scripts on one page cause any problems? Either with their results, or my own analytics?

        Michael,

Nobody gets too far down the road without leaving footprints.

If he is a 'somebody' he'll have a list of referrences he'll let you check out.

If he can't provide that, be careful.

As long as you post the actual javascript so you can see it and have control over it, should be ok. I most certainly would not link to a .js file though. He can change that on his end at any time.

I feel that part of the problem here is a discrepancy in what people define mirror as... He may not be the most tech savvy person so may just be quoting something a "techy" has told him.

As far as i know, most people refer to a mirror as something where they actually host the files on another server, but, if all he means is an iframe then it's easy to see why he needs the code on your server and as far as I can tell it shouldn't be a problem but I'd recommend someone who understands what they're doing should read over the code.

I've got the same request, probably from the same company.

The questions I've asked (though haven't yet had a reply to), is if they're promoting the Clickbank affiliate program, why do they need their own tracking - or are they planning on using their own affiliate program?

I also asked why they wanted a mirror website, as I can't imagine why they'd want this.

They also mentioned that they'd like me to "eat" any refunds over 5%, or something like that.

Normally the refund rates aren't that high, but what if they send junk buyers? It's possible to actually LOSE money out of that deal.

As always, it's good to ask as many questions as you can until you feel comfortable. If they're serious, they'll work with you and explain why they want to do things that way.

    cheers

This may be the first time I have ever been wrong but there is something about the whole thing that just smells like a long walk through the cow pasture! If it were me, I wouldn't do it. It just seems like they are trying to appeal to the greedy side of people!

Here is one legitimate reason to mirror a salespage...

If another heavy hitter is PPCing your product and they want to get on that keyword without a bidding war. Put a copy on their domain and G-adwords is happy and its still direct to the salespage from the ad for the clicker.

Heck if they are really serious, they might have multiple mirrors and take over the ads on the first page.

And if they are sending traffic other ways it is nice to see the referrer stats on your own server.

          Be careful
I was recently approached by a guy that's a recognized super affiliate. He wanted way too many concessions and accommodations.
I did some checking into his background and found some things that set off alarms. Judgments, liens, lawsuits. I turned him away.

And you unlock one of the many "secret" reasons to use a mirror :-)

If you find a campaign that is pulling really well, why only send traffic via one Ad on G? Take over the page and milk that sucker. (Talking of course about the keywords that CONVERT and NOT the high traffic keywords)

If a campaign gets to be that good, you SHOULD already have created your own product, plug your product into the system that has already proved to be profitable and promote it as an affiliate. This will not only increase your earnings but will attract a number of other affiliates who you should over time allow to take over your adspend on G so you can put the thing on autopilot and go search for the next winner.

This is exactly the same message I got. They want me to eat any refunds over 5%. Not a problem since my refund rate is very few, but we'll never know if they're going to promote to serial refunders.

Guess they've already contacted some Clickbank merchants already with the same proposal. If anyone went through with the transaction, would be great to know the outcome.

      Thanks a lot,
      Michael

The only time a mirror site or another domain that has another extension is used is when that certain affiliate is a super affilite and you are giving them a much higher commission structure compared to the normal affiliates.

This super affiliate could e getting 80% commission because they are heavily using ppc, or their traffic funnel is so deep and they demand higher commission, you could tell this individual to just buy the dot net extension of your domain and then setup a system where they get higher commission.

Mirroring is also good if I don't want to advertise your URL. If I build links to a site, it should be one I own.

There are legitimate reasons why a very strong and adept internet marketer would be interested in tracking code on your thank you page as well as mirroring your code. In my case, as a long-time Web programmer, I would be able to analyze what they propose and sniff out any holes in their proposal. Get their reasoning in writing and run it by someone who is tech savvy for informed feedback.
