Advice, when submitting to articles...

to the numerous places on the web, I've seen people just put their affiliate link straight into the article.

Example, at the end of the article, when they say the "Click here to buy this product off amazon"

Can you get away with that, or should you just link to your website instead? And then try to get them to the product site from there?

It depends on the article directory.
eZineArticles don't let you place affiliate links. You must send people to your site and then use a redirect or use your site to pre-sell.
Others, let you use affiliate links.

Different article directories have different submission guidelines, just check the submission guidelines and follow them. Lot of article directories allow affiliate links.

There are some that allow it, but it is not a good practice to get into. Start writing and submitting your articles the correct way to get the best results in the long run.

In a nutshell, "Yes" you can get away with it on some directories. But if you are trying to build a long-term business that will make you real money, that is not the most effective way to do it. You are better to direct them to your site and get them on your email list for that niche. Even if you are not building a list but want immediate income, you will generally have greater conversions by using your own site to pre-sell potential customers.
