Traffic Generation Methods... AGAIN

I know that practically every third thread on this forum concerns this topic, but I wanted to explain my particular situation and see if anyone has any helpful advice. Or, more accurately, see if anyone cares to share their helpful advice, because I know many of you know much more about this than I do.

Here's my situation: I am helping somebody out with their traffic generation. The website sells anatomical models and patient awareness tools to vets, doctors, dentists, professors/teachers, schools, etc. Here's the site in case you want to see:

www.anatomynow.com

It's a nice-looking site, but it gets a very small amount of daily traffic (less than 50 hits a day).

My traffic strategy has involved concentration on the following methods:

1. Getting a twitter up and running to start gathering followers
2. Writing some content (so far I've only written one article though) to disperse among hubpages, squidoo, wordpress.com, and article directories (ezinearticles, scribd, docstoc, etc.) and of course post on the site
3. Some forum action (which has proved to be more difficult than I thought because of my lack of anything helpful to say to medical professionals, not being one myself)
4. Personalized emails to websites with larger Page Ranks offering affiliate commissions for a follow link
5. ...?

I really want to boost the traffic numbers up a little bit and to do that, I'm not sure which methods to concentrate on and how to do them effectively. The owner of the site has done some on-site SEO but it still doesn't rank particularly well.

My question is this: what method(s) should I concentrate on, and how can I stop wasting time doing a little of this and a little of that and start doing things that will have quantifiable results? (Simple, right?)

Do good keyword research. Then publish content optimized for your keywords.

That's a pretty interesting product offering. If you haven't yet tested PPC for searches such as "anatomical models for sale", that would be a great place to start.

SEO will get your site some very good traffic. Concentrate on producing content around specific keyword (research them!!) and you'll be able to funnel decent traffic.

In the meantime you can also try some article marketing.

Who are your target audience? Where are they? Are they on twitter?

Traffic is not much help if it's not targeted, after all, the products on this site are pretty specialized and not an impulse buy for the ordinary web surfer.

From a search traffic point of view... a quick Micro Niche Finder search shows that there are some more keyword phrases you might benefit from targeting as well as the existing ones:

    searchterm localcount globalcnt exactmatch
    anatomical models 2900 5400 225000
    anatomical model 1600 3600 61400
    anatomy models 1600 3600 55800
    anatomy model 1900 4400 61300
    human anatomy model 1300 2400 18900
    human anatomy diagram 4400 22200 6580
    human muscle chart 1900 2900 73100
    skeleton model 2900 5400 59000
    anatomical chart company 2400 4400 37300
    human body diagram 22200 40500 193000
    human body model 1300 2900 60400
    anatomy posters 1000 2900 51300
    muscle charts 1000 1300 18300
    muscle chart 4400 5400 74300
    anatomy charts 1000 1900 163000
    anatomy chart 1900 2900 155000
    human anatomy chart 3600 4400 14200

    This one looks especially interesting:
    human body diagram 22200 40500 193000
although it may be mostly kids looking for school project info.

Another possibility - if your ranking for these terms is good but you're not seeing much traffic from them, it may be that the over-seo'ed and not human-friendly title is putting people off. For example, the typo in your title is doing you no good - you don't come up for it at all when I search in quotes, and outside quotes, Google fixes the typo for the searcher automagically.

It's all about the numbers, 1 article distributed around a few web 2.0 and article directories won't do very much. Some forum action won't do much good you need tons of forum action. How many personalized e-mails to website owners. 2,3 or 2,000 3,000.

My advise pick ONE method and work at it HARD. All of the above methods word you just need to do lots and lots and lots of it.

Most successful article marketers write (or outsource) 5 - 10 articles per day. For forum posters it's 20 -30 posts per day. This is the kind of dedication you need to make these strategies work.

Take onboard everything thing in this thread, decide on 1 strategy and don't stop till you've got it to work.

I know you started the basics already but I would just like to add something. Submit your site to more social bookmarking sites. Getting into twitter is good but having your site submitted to other social bookmarking sites would be even better. Submit your site to quality site directories and change the title every now and then. Search engine spiders will think your site is popular and will rank higher your site higher. Submit more articles to article directory site or you can proceed with video marketing. You tube is a potential site to earn traffic and gain backlinks. Hope this helps.... Goodluck....

For a site like this, I would definitely give Google Adwords a try. While getting the hang of that, I'd go door-to-door to every doctors office I could find and give them a flyer or brochure or something to tell them about the site.

You have a narrow, interesting and targeted niche there. Apart from what has already been said, (eg SEO and using the right keywords), I would look at his niche and think that it can respond better to some offline marketing rather than just online.

Think about your potential customer. they are mostly Doctors, Health Professionals, Vets and some Educational types. Not the kind of people who hang around in forums or for that matter are constantly trawling the "web".

I would also look to expand my customer base to the high end of town.....for example the cosmetic surgery folks, health resorts, fitness trainers, gyms and the like.

I then would start by doing a local search for the types of client who need your products. For example "doctors chicago"...then you will have to collect their contact information and contact them....email or by post...with your offer.

It takes some, but Im sure you get the idea.
You could also try finding a specific niche related newsletter or ezine and putting a solo ad there. I use Directory of Ezines dot com. Its a paid service, but can get your message out to a targeted audience.

Good points! This is one thing similar to the strategy of main street marketing wherein you'll be searching for the local offliners who'd be interested in helping promote their products through your marketing strategies. Therefore, your blog could turn as the "marketing module" for these doctors to also promote their businesses while your blog gains traffic in return.

First of all, you should pick a niche you know something about, for this very reason.

Secondly, you need to write much more articles. When starting a new site, 1 article per day is what you're looking for (you can later switch to an article per two or even three days), but now, you have to show your beginning audience that you have something to say.

theres only two methods of generating traffic paid and free.

paid is easy and temporary: ppc, ppv, social, media buys, ect..

free requires much more work: link building and other seo methods.

Based on what you've said there's a lot of room for off-site SEO on your site. So building high quality links is probably your best bet

Get those articles out there!! Choose a good keyword. Optimise the site, do articles and submit to at least 25 article sites and then bookmark the main site and and also all the articles to loads of bookmarking sites!!!

Do both paid and free traffic methods. I'm not a big stickler on doing one traffic method. I think variety is the spice of life and in your situation would lead to a much improved bottom line.

What types of methods should you use???

Start with PPC. I love article marketing but I'm not a fan of using it to drive customers to a new or relatively new website because it takes time to gain traction where paid traffic is immediate. Use google, yahoo, msn and other networks such as pulse 360 for both search and content ppc. You can also advertise directly on websites targeted to your customers.

You can send direct mail to your potential customers. You can use space ads in industry trade journals, in fact you can volunteer to write articles in trade journals.

For free methods I've already said that I like articles. Start writing some, or better yet, have some written for you. It may take some time but the cumulative effect is well worth it.

Start a face book fan page for your business. Create some educational videos and post them on the big video sharing sites. I really don't use Twitter so I can't really comment on it.

Don't be afraid to try something new or different.

I suggest you focus on one form of article generation before you move onto the next. You will be able to milk your offers down to the last penny when you know the ins and outs of the various traffic sources available.

Start with the traffic source you are most comfortable with first and then master it.
