Paid member site change to FREE?

Dumb move?

My traffic isn't exactly where I want it. I believe it is due to the fact that my niche (tutoring videos) is being offered everywhere online for free.

I'm thinking about making my site a free site and adding, obviously, adsense, chikita, amazon links, etc.. I'm sure I can generate tons of traffic with this free service.

I have over 400 videos, 400 worksheets, about 400 articles, and free educational assessments.

Am I crazy?

What do you think?

Thanks

These are all great suggestions. Maybe you could offer something like a 1 dollar trial? That is not much money at all and if your sites quality is good, it can be very easy to convert a trial member into a paying member.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, I do have teaser videos on youtube and yes, I have tried the $1 trial but my traffic isn't very high. I get about 3000-3500 unique visits per month (I'm not sure if that's good or not).

I have been toying with the idea of setting up an affiliate program such as clickbank. What concerns me though, is the fact that free tutoring videos can be found everywhere. Albeit, most freebies do not cover the curriculum as mine do, they are still free, and most people would sacrifice quality if a product is available for free.

Do you have any currently paying members? Have you worked out what they like and what keeps them paying? I wouldn't necessarily change anything in terms of paid v free because you may alienate existing customers.

Restructure everything and work out what your USP is. If you provide more value than the free resources then people will be prepared to pay for it.

Try offering a few products for free - maybe just the basic tutorials. Then if customers are interested they can available of your other videos for a price. Or try offering the first few videos for free, then the succeeding products should be of charge. If they see that your tutorials are very informative & useful to them, they should be coming back for more.

I just took a quick look at your site, so I may be off base, but I would maybe suggest organizing things into "courses." Make it more "packaged."

As it is now, it almost seems as if you're offering "tips." People don't like to pay for "tips," but they will pay for "solutions." If you can repackage what you have and sell "courses," not "tips," then it might appeal more to your audience. It seems you could also use some better structuring of your message along those lines too. It seems the way it is now, you are giving them a lot of details about the videos, but you aren't telling them what the videos will do for them. (i.e. you're giving them the features, not the benefits).

I've been watching a fair amount of Eben Pagan's stuff lately (the free videos), and he talks about those very issues.

I can't remember if it's this course of his or not, but you might check it out. The program is closed, but you can still watch the videos. GURU MasterMind - Closed

I would try to reorganize things before opening it up for free. With 400 videos, it's worth trying, I would say.

Yeah, as I learned from Eben...

    Turn your 'tips' into 'techniques'...

...then group your 'techniques' into 'methods'.

It may sound silly, but structuring your content and using those words will represent the value you're offering much better.
