How much to offer for domain on first page of Google?

Hi,

I'm just getting started with IM. After some research I found a domain that ranks #7 on the first page of Google. There is nothing else to it, it's essentially an empty "Hello World" Wordpress blog.

I'm wondering if I should offer the owner to buy the domain and build my first site. This could be a great way for me to get some first hand IM experience.

Here some more details:
Google result: #7 for exact keyword (Page Rank 0)
Domain age: 3 years

About the keyword:

Searches each DAY: 800 broad, 200 exact
Competition: 150,000 phrase matches for keyword

Competition:

Some big sites are ranking for the top spots.
I think I can get the site up to #4 in the results.

Monetization strategy:

I would set up a basic site with unique content and put up ads to related products.

My question to you experienced IM'ers is now: how much do you think I should offer for this domain and is it even worth considering?

Is there anything else that I should consider before offering to buy this domain?

As I said, I'm new to Internet Marketing and can't yet judge how much revenue potential we are talking about. I have a strong IT/business background and am familiar with SEO and the technical details so that should not get in the way.

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

My inkling is if this site is nothing more than an empty wordpress blog with 0 pagerank, and it is ranking fairly high for your target keywords, you are probably better off just purchasing a similar domain yourself and building a blog from scratch. It shouldn't take very long to climb above the site you are contemplating buying.

How closely does their domain match the keywords you are targeting? Does the domain have the keywords you are targeting in it? If not then you should just buy a domain with the keywords in it and build your own blog.

Does not sound like I would be offering much at all for this domain, if anything at all.

That really doesnt sound like anything special.

Buy a domain which exactly matches your search term (you'll find a good one eventually with similar search volumes) and it'll make it really easy to get first page.

Basically I don't think it would be worth the hassle of acquiring.

Thanks for the responses so far. Here some more details:
      • It's a two term keyword like this one: "tolles Haus"
      • It's a country specific (google.de) search and I'm talking about the ".com" version of the domain (e.g. tollesHaus.com)
      • The ".de" version (e.g. tollesHaus.de) already ranks #3 in the results and has quite a lot of content

Most of the other sites have a higher Page Rank so I'm surprised to see an empty PR0 site ranking on the first page. Google must put a lot of emphasis on the .com, that's the only way I can explain this.

Other similar domains with that keyword are all gone (tolles-haus.de tolles-haus.com).

Based on your experience, how much ad revenue can I expect from a site that gets between 200 and 1000 hits each month?

200-1000 hits per month? Not much at all. Maybe a few dollars...

I understand you want to start off with something smaller and work your way into it however I think this is probably a little too small. I don't want to see you sitting there working on a site for months and months only to earn a few dollars as it will discourage you.

Aim a little higher. Having a small piece of a big traffic pie is better than eating a whole small traffic pie - if that makes sense... lol.

@WillR: Thanks for the comment. What would you say is the minimum traffic/month to make it worthwhile? 5,000/month or 10,000 visits/month?

It all depends on what you are doing with that traffic - google adwords, affiliate offers, cpa offers. There is not set amount of traffic you need but obviously the more the better.

What I was trying to get at is that if you go after the top position of a keyword that only gets 1,000 hits a month, then you are limiting yourself to just that. If you go after a much higher trafficked keyword, you might end up on page 7 only getting 1,000 hits a month however you still have a lot more potential left to keep climbing even higher and getting more and more traffic as you go.

Seriously, do as others have recommended here. Buy a new domain, setup your blog and get posting, the .com will win out every time and don't be so concerned about the PR, google themselves have said it is not so important these days and have even removed it from the webmaster tools. Keep your new site tight, clean and frequent good content and you will fly along. Best of luck to you. Kieron

You need to look at the market and if you can make it work. Traffic value is different for different people.

First off you said that it ranks on page 1 with the exact keyword, do you mean with quotes? Ranking with quotes or some other form of search doesn't mean much. Does it rank on the first page without any search operators? Meaning if you type it in and search is it there?

Secondly, if it's an empty blog then chances are it's going to be a fairly easy term to rank for if it is in fact on the first page without quotes. If that's the case I would do as others have said and just create your own.

How many backlinks does the site have? If it has a lot of backlinks already and it is on the first page then I would consider buying it but not for much money since there is no content. Chances are you could do the same thing in a short time if you just copy the backlinks.

It ranks on page 1, position #7 using no search operators.

Using double quotes it only ranks #10 on page 10.

There are about 60 backlinks to the domain (Yahoo Site Explorer), but they seem fishy. All of them are from completely unrelated sites ("CHEAP DENTIST" kind of stuff) and I could not verify a single one of them. Not sure why they are still listed.

I don't think the owner has bought the links as the site has been empty since the beginning (telling from archive.org).
