What the HECK Are People Spending Money On?

I don't know about you...but in my circle of business friends (pretty big circle), nobody seems to be spending money on friggin anything! All within the last two months.

-Client projects have disappeared for web designers
-SEO pro's can't get their clients to pay their monthly payments
-Affiliate managers can't get affiliates to promote their products
-Long-time Internet marketing mentors are getting heat from the FTC about their money making claims (and you know that's the primary way they get people to buy).

It's like the ONLY thing people will buy these days is yet another get rich quick Internet marketing system. But people aren't even buying those offers! The few that do spend the next six months making their whatever product and going through whatever product launch process they've bought into only to get trickle in sales if anything at all. When the "get rich quick" industry is starving, that's cause for alarm

So, I ask the question what the heck are people buying?

Here's some more of a list of what I'm hearing from my connections of what people are NOT buying:

-Insurance: Everyone is in fear of the health reform and commissions have been cut in half for a good chunk of insurance agents

-Real Estate: Because no one has good enough credit to get funding (still)

-Cars: Maybe if you have enough cash to pay cash but still car sales are virtually non-existent no matter what you might hear on the news

-Education: People will go to free Meetups or webinars instead of the paid seminars they used to attend

-Memberships: People are looking at their credit card statements and just nixing anything that has a monthly payment attached...including membership websites

-Auto-ships: Even one client of mine has reported next to ZERO sales for the past month for some kind of network marketing vitamin drink he sells through his website whereas for the past 3 years he's had at least 3 sales per day

Where else are you seeing "the axe" before your very eyes? What industries are you avoiding like the plague? Is there any industry you're seeing people consistently spending money? Ha, and would you even tell Warrior Forum members if there was?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

If you are selling something of 'value' to a buyer then there are buyers everywhere.

Inclusive of both offline and online marketing.

You reminded me, I need new flip flops.

I am very picky, and wanted to get the ones I had before.

I now live in a place where jcrew is not available, so I just went to look to order them online but they are out of stock.

        Women's shoes - sale - Classic wedge flip-flops - J.Crew

Well, here is what I spent money on this past week.

I bought some food at the grocery store.

I bought a "mandoline" - that is a special slicer that makes really thin slices. It was needed for a pizza recipe. I got the pizza recipe from a book that my friend bought for me online from Amazon.

I almost bought the mandoline online, but did manage to find one locally.

We bought some TV trays ordered online.

Some outdoor chairs were ordered online as well - and a new grill.

Bought a usb stick wireless card for one of the computers - actually found the computer for FREE.

Oh, just bought a glue gun and some glue and made this really swanky lampshade last night:

And now I need to go out and buy some stuff to make a new pizza, a multi plug cord, some red thread (more crafting), and a silly paper towel holder. Oh, some elastic is on the list and looks like I need some booze.

I found the Market Samurai product much more suitable for what I want to do. And WebCeo feels incomplete, e.g. the competition analysis isn't anywhere near as good as MS and the niche research stuff doesn't seem to find anything at all. I'm not in a mood to do a complete review here but suffice to say if your aim is to find good keywords to target for your niche, MS will get you there faster and give you more confidence you are choosing the right keywords.

This should give you a hint:

Search on Google for some keywords in a niche of interest.

If you get a bunch of Google ads - you know people are buying. Otherwise nobody would spend their money on those ads.

I 'partly' agree with that statement. Although, it's kind of hard to say with google still randomly killing AdWords accounts as they've been doing so much of over the past six months.

A friend of mine has been running AdWords for about 4 years to the same website. Almost exactly the same campaign. Getting steady results for their lead gen site. Google came along four months ago and shut off their AdWords account. She started it again of course and has been working to build back their Quality Score ever since. Leads have dwindled to one a week where they used to be about 5 a day. Not a thing has been changed on the landing pages. It's like Google is being selective on the type of traffic they're delivering somehow. But, that's another topic.

My point is that there's a good example of someone still spending money on google ads even though they're not working for whatever reason. I'm not sure how reliable we can look at AdWords anymore for predicting hot areas anyway. We used to be able to see how many people have ads displaying (the number past what is displayed) but they even removed that.

Exactly my point. I know most of the guys personally doing these product launches and I also know they're getting 3 times the amount of refund requests as usual and less and less inquiries and closes for their monthly coaching programs. And, it's scaring the hell out of them.

Consumers nowadays care more about value. It's not that they have stopped spending, but more so they are more careful with what they spend on. Every dollar spent, they want maximum value out of it. If you can provide a product/service that offers GOOD value for money, clients will still buy from you.

Ahh, good comment. That's very true. For those of us that provide services (have my own products too and a bunch of affiliate sites, so it's not like I only do services for others), I would like to suggest it's the very "value" concept that is killing services businesses. I do very much provide huge value for a buck to my clients. But, lately even that's not good enough. The expectations for services performed has really gone through the roof to the point that I'm really losing interest in helping others for a services fee. And, if I'm not alone in that thought, which I'm fairly certain I'm not, it could be a very scary predicament for people who are "seeking" services of exceptional value. Drive those away from providing the services of value and all you'll have left are the skanks.

I have been doing pretty well making sure people know there are discounts available. And bringing that piece of infrmation to the front of my marketing pieces.

It could also be that the market for low price point marketing courses with follow on large monthly payments has dropped. I don't know that first hand, I am just guessing.

You'll find that people are always more than willing to spend money if the right offer comes along. In terms of why people are spending less on SEO consultation and Marketing the main reason is because the internet provides so much do it yourself info.

People are getting information (many a times for FREE) and so are less willing to spend money in some areas.

Having said that if you offer what people want you will always find buyers.

Information continues to be RED HOT - health sub-niches are hot, the population is more stressed, getting older and more aware of alternative therapies for less severe, yet potentially de-bilitating illnesses, lots of opportunity here.

Lots of other sub-niches working really well in information -- parenting, kids sports coaching (various from soccer to hockey and baseball), blogging, social networking, sub-niches within relationships, etc...

I'm not seeing information marketing slow down at all - niche popularity changes and their are trends in competition, quality, marketing methods etc...but the demand for information has never been greater.

lol... I've booked $300K in new consulting engagements since June 1. I've got so much client work right now that I can't even hardly spend time on launching any info product stuff that I desperately want to get out the door.

The cream will always rise to the top.

I had a meeting yesterday with a friend, the owner of a multi-million dollar B2B marketing agency, and he's covered up so badly but he's strapped for QUALITY stuff to sell his customer base. He's becoming a JV for me and we're going to cross sell to each other's customer bases.

Don't know about you, but I'm making nice money from CPA and Adsense. My earnings have dropped a bit lately, but it's probably because I haven't launched any new website for about 4 months - I'm basically living from the "old glory".

I can say that I also make consistent affiliate sales, but the thing is that I promote certain types of software that are always in demand - for example article spinning software etc...

I just spent about $5000 on an LED TV with 5.1 theatre surround sound. Thanks for asking.

P.S - I didn't need one single promo email, presell or sales letter to drop that cash down, I just looked at the reviews and the specs, and pulled out my card.

And guess what, the guy in the shop told me that TV sales had sky rocketed since the start of the world cup (oh yeah, that's in a supposed recession. I guess the news stories have failed to remind people that they can't afford to spend their money, right?)

    The bottom line?

Find out what people want, when they want it, why they want it, and give it to them for a price they cannot turn down.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Instead of complaining or wondering why the sky is falling, you should be asking "How can I make money in this new environment?" or "How can I profit from all of this?".

Money never disappears, it just changes hands. Find out where the money is going.

It's much more productive of your time if you try to find a solution instead of focusing on the negatives.

This is exactly what I am thinking. It also serves as a reminder to us all that we cannot become complacent with what/when/how we deliver our value to our customers - there are better things coming out all the time, and eventually our current customers may take a look and become hooked on the 'new shiny'.

Adaptation and observation. Find out where the money is shifting, and you will find those hidden buyers.

Several that I've gotten into over the past 15 years gradually. I have about 30 affiliate products I promote (2/3 have nothing to do with IM), a few Internet marketing manuals that I've written, member site, but my clients are authors and speakers mostly.

These are all very inspiring comments everyone, thanks. My sales personally have gone down a bit in some areas, but where I'm really seeing the difference is with people who have had the same content on their sites for like 3 years and all of a sudden sales just tanked. Just interesting.
